He says he will continue to use condoms when we are intimate but I would feel better using the patch even tho it is not 100% effective either. How can I get him to change his mind. We are both adult, over the age of 25 if that helps.

My girlfriend has been on almost every single kind of birth control there is. Most of them have a pretty good effectiveness, and some do have some nasty side effects (weight gain, mood alteration, bleeding in between periods, etc).

Discuss with your doctor to find out which method is best for you.

That's interesting because my boyfriend is the same way. He wouldn't be mad if I decided to go on the pill or patch but he is very skeptical too. He thinks anything that makes your body act unnatural (like only have a period 3 times in one year) doesn't seem right. But whatever you feel right doing you should do. I am okay with him using condoms and since he is too, it presents no problem. But if you would rather be on the pill/patch, you should do what you want. Bring him to the doctor with you so he can listen to what they have to say, maybe he is misinformed. There is so many forms of birth control out there, so research it. But ultimately, it is your decision. Good luck =)

Since you are an adult, you have the right to make the decisions about the type of birth control that you are going to use. It is your body, and therefore your decision.

What concerns does your boyfriend have? Are they true health related concerns, or is he thinking about the weight gain possibility because of his own issues?

No birth control method is 100% effective, but two types can be helpful and more effective.

You need to see your doctor/gyno and discuss the types of birth control which would work well for you with your medical background.

Best of luck to you, I hope you are able to make the best decisions for yourself.

It's not his choice. It's YOUR body. If you want to get on Birth Control, do it. I've been on the pill for 3 years now and only have noticed good things (less cramps, lighter, shorter periods). A friend of mine was on the patch for a while and had no problems with it.

The only one I wouldn't suggest is the shot. My old college roommate tried that one for a year and hated it. Everytime she got it (approximately once a month I think), she was knocked out for the day with flu-like symptoms. I haven't heard anything positive about the shot.

Talk to your Gynecologist about it and they can prescribe the right kind for your lifestyle (pill, patch, ring, etc).

It is your body and your choice. You're the one who has control over your own medical concerns, not him. One thing you can do, if you want him involved in your decision is bring him to your doctor's appointment so he can have his questions answered. Other than that, I'm afraid he's going to have to get over it.

I've personally been on the patch for several years now and love it. I haven't had any side effects, other than a bit of irritation from the adhesive. It was minor and has since passed.

do what you want. i've been on a lot of different birth control including the patch and i found the best one to be the nuva ring. perfectly timed light periods, clear skin, and i haven't gained a pound in over a year. but yes, be safe. i've only been with my boyfriend and yet we still use both condoms and birth contorl...EVERY TIME. better safe than sorry. tell him that one day the condom might break...and then what would he do? baby? no no no!!

Go ahead and use whatever method you want. It's not his decision - it's up to you and your doctor. Unless he's paying for the insurance, he has no say in this. And I mean if he's paying for your medical insurance out of his own pocket, not if he's put you on his insurance policy through his employer.

One warning: The patch won't protect you from STDs. If either of you is infected, or you suspect he might be, you need to take additional steps to deal with this.

Get on the patch or pill. The side affects are not as bad as you think.
