Once soreness sets in, there is really little you can do except let your legs recover. Light stretching may help a tiny bit. A massage would also help with some of the pain, as would a nice hot bath. But again, if this is deep, painful, debilitating soreness (where you find it hard to walk up stairs, et cetera), then you are experiencing DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), which results from microscopic tears in the muscle tissue. For that, you will need to let the muscle rest for complete recovery.
Running today? Well, that might not feel very good, though some very light cardiovascular exercise to get blood flowing through your leg muscles might help the soreness a bit (and help the recovery period along by bringing much-needed nutrition to your aching muscles).
If there is too much pain, forget it. Wait until you are better.

1. I used to run track, and still do a lot of walking. I find it helpful for me to take a cool shower, or ice my legs down then let them warm up , on their own. I also keep a container of icy / hot or deep heat, etc. with me while I'm working to lesson the pain. When I'm done for the day I sit with my legs elevated. to help keep any swelling or inflamation that happened to me.
2 Like the other person said. Before you work out or exercise any it is always good to stretch your muscles a bit before you exert yourself.
If you feel you need to run, then dont over do it, just run a short distance and stop to see how your legs feel. If it hurts to much then walk the rest of the way back. and do a few more stretches when you're done, then the treatments I mentioned previously.

1. That happens! I've over-exerted myself many times, especially when beginning a new work out program. A bath might help, or a massage if you want to splurge!
2. I think it would help stretch out the muscles. What's most important is that you don't repeat the weight training activities until the muscles have time to heal. Doing something different, like running, shouldn't matter that much. But if your body tells you it needs a day off, let it take the day off!
Good luck!

Over training happens, I wouldn't beat yourself up over it, but allow yourself to heal and learn from it.
I would say don't run, but walk the same amount of time you would have been running.
