At-will employment is a doctrine of American law that defines an employment relationship in which either party can terminate the relationship with no liability if there was no express contract for a definite term governing the employment relationship. Under this legal doctrine, any hiring is presumed to be "at will"; that is, the employer is free to discharge individuals "for good cause, or bad cause, or no cause at all," and the employee is equally free to quit, strike, or otherwise cease work. You have every right to leave your work without notice, and, although it should not affect your employment history, I can tell you that it does not endear you to a potential employer that you have left another job without notice. "Your right" be damned....they are looking at whether you have exhibited a sense of loyality and responsibility at your previous job. Will leaving an at will employment without notice affect a security clearance needed for government jobs? Absolutely not.

I also live in VA and from what I understand an employer can only verify if you worked there or not. They can't discuss why you left. So if you were fired, they can't say. Now since you are tryiong to get a security clearance that may be different. I would give some type of notice even if it's only to go in and tell them you'll never be back.

Yes, it will affect your employment history and yes, you could possibly pass the security clearance as long as everything fits into place...they do investigate and they will investigate your previous job that you had quit before giving 2 weeks notice.

It will not affect securtiy clearance stuff.
It will affect your ability to be hired if the next company calls to check your references. Leaving without notice is generally considered poor form.
Unless you have a very specialized skill, I would not hire you.

If you can hold it out, put in your two weeks. Its always best to do that. Some companies don't even want that. You turn in your two weeks and they are like, leave now. But you are the better person in the end. :)
