The Gulf War or Persian Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991)[4][5] was a conflict between Iraq and a coalition force from 35 nations[6] authorized by the United Nations (UN) and led primarily by the United States in order to liberate Kuwait.

The war developed out of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. The aggression was met with immediate economic sanctions by the UN against Iraq. The international armed intervention began in January 1991 and resulted in a decisive victory for the coalition forces, which drove Iraqi forces out of Kuwait with minimal coalition deaths. Aerial and ground combat was confined to Iraq, Kuwait, and bordering areas of Saudi Arabia. Iraq also launched missiles against targets in Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Since the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-88 had been called the "Gulf War" or "Persian Gulf War" by many news sources, the 1991 war has sometimes been called the Second Gulf War, but more commonly, the 1991 war is styled simply the Gulf War or the "First Gulf War", in distinction from the 2003 Invasion of Iraq.[7] Operation Desert Storm was the U.S. name of the air and land operations and is often used to refer to the conflict.

In 1990 Saddam Hussein invaded the northern portion of Kuwait including the Rumaylah oilfields. Saddam based his invasion off of territorial disputes and felt wronged by Kuwait because Kuwait refused to waive the debt owed to them by Iraq. Shortly after the invasion the U.N. and U.S. condemned the actions and placed sanctions against Iraq. A deadline was made for Iraq to pullout before military actions were used against the invading army. On Aug. 7, 1990, President Bush opened "Operation Desert Sheild", a defensive operation that would build up American troops in Saudi Arabia to try and prevent further invasion by Iraq. On January 16, 1990, the deadline for Iraqi withdrawal had come. A day later "Operation Desert Storm" had begun and that was the start of the Gulf War. It ended on Feb. 27,1990, with a cease-fire agreement and an Iraqi withdrawal.

Kuwait. Read the events between the two countries in the years running up to Saddam's invasion.

Part of it was over oil, part of it debt, and the other part being Kuwait was a state of Iraq shaved off after WWII.

Saddam invading Kuwait set it off.

I believe the speculation at the time was that he wanted to expand his coastline, thus expanding his export capability of Iraqi oil along with that taken from Kuwait.

I seem to recall that it stems from Iraqi claims that Kuwait is part of Iraq. More ancient bickering between the peace loving Muslims.

A dozen or so AH-64 Apache Helicopters blowing a whole in the Iraqi air-defense network... closely followed by fixed wing aircraft taking out the rest of his C3

THAT was the start of the WAR... others have stated the CAUSAL forces that led to war.
