Would I suddenly believe the creator of the universe was inside my head? Probably not. Would my state of mind change? Probably.

Well I believe, It depends on the amount of time before your death. You may have more time with an illness, than you do falling from a cliff. The reason time is key, is because I never heard of any one suddenly converting, unless, there was a spiritual connection between you and your faith. For example, many people who have posted an answer to this question, may think that they are actually posting a right answer. Who knows if they are? The point is the belief, the belief that they have an answer or the faith in their answer. That is what it takes to become spiritual. The belief. I am not deep into relegion my self, though the word eminent itself means to me that you believe somethings are superior. That word itself is similar to being supernatural. If you are confused, that is why relegion offers guidance. Many of us kinda say ok and turn our shoulders. IT IS UP TO YOU! FREE CHOICE
I am the everyday sinner, Yes I have conversation with God in my mind, because I believe in God. My friend became an athiest. Then she was a buddhist. Now she believes in Christ. It is whatever can get you through the day, and make you feel good. Robert I like your answer, but it isn't nuetral. Though I am a christian and me, myself am committing a sin right now. My religion is taught to shine light on others. "Christ." Do I? No. I leave it up to you. My personal choice for choosing christ is the reason similar to what Robert said, below. We believe Christ will return, and or die and you will have an afterlife. Where? That is my thorn. The what If? Haha ...Good luck.

I'm not actively atheist or agnostic but I don't really believe in God.
I might, but I'd more likely make the most of the rest of my life and possibly just pray in the evenings as more of a think about what I've done during the day rather as a communication with God. I don't know really.
Are you a student of religious studies?

Sweetie, there is a difference between being religious and being spiritual. One can be spiritual without being religious and there are spiritual atheists and agnostics. And I'm one of them.
I have been in situations since becoming an atheist where I felt sure I was going to die. Did I pray? No. Was I tempted to pray? No. For me there is no point to it. To me it would be as pointless as a grown adult writing a wish list to Santa (no offense)
If someone is truly an atheist, then the idea of praying simply won't occur to them.

Pray - whats that got to do with spirituality? We all will die, just a few think / hope we will carry on after. I do not - so I pack my love fro fellow beings in in the 30 years or so I have left.
I have come within a second of death three times in my life - none made me want to pray or become religious in any way.

Sorry. Been in that situation. Didn't even think about praying. We did get in an argument about over how we were going to die. My friend thought we would die when our (his) floundering 26 foot boat was beaten against the cliffs by the 35 foot swells of the Pacific storm. I thought we would survive that, though not happily, and slowly drown while being beaten against the cliffs after the boat was sunk.
Then the Coast Guard showed up. Hallelujah!

Twice in Vietnam I thought it was eminent and I was hurt very badly in a major car wreck here and when I woke up in ICU, I was constantly reminded how lucky I was. I just cannot help the fact that I am an Atheist and I don't see any possibility of that ever changing.

Not a chance. I haven't stuck to the path of truth my entire life, only to become a hypocrite at the very end. Besides that, I've watched many members of my family on their deathbeds. None, not even my fundamentalist Pentecostal parents had any interest in religion in their final hours. None prayed, or would even allow others to pray in their presence. Dad went so far as to call his longtime favorite preacher a vulture and ordered him out of the room, so he, "could die in peace." I've had a couple close calls with death, and I can assure you, religion was never on my mind.

I am spiritual now and am very accepting of the inevitability of death. I can also be said to pray, just not to any god. One does not need to be religious in order to be spiritual.

I was in a car accident a few years ago. A split-second before the collision, when I could see it was inevitable, a complete sense of calmness washed over me. I hardly felt any pain during the crash.
I contribute this to an amazing defense mechanism, the release of dopamine in stressful situations, and the increase of adrenaline.
PS -- I lived.
