if i walked around all day covered in peanut butter and you asked me why i was covered in peanut butter, to which i reply, "to keep the demons out." i'd imagine you laugh about it. i imagine any sane person would. is there any difference between picking on one person for his unpopular superstitious beliefs as opposed to picking on millions of people for their superstitious beliefs?

You are right - I would laugh at you. But you would be so tasty ....

I suppose the answer would be that you shouldn't pick on my superstitions because picking on people makes you somewhat of a jerk.

After all, what did my superstitions ever do to you? What impact does my belief in something that you disregard have on your life?

If you were the sort that walks about covered in peanut butter in order to keep the demons out, I am certain that I would laugh about it for a number of reasons, but I hope that I would have the decorum to wait until I am not disrupting your daily prayers to the Cosmic Loaf of Bread to do so.

Picking on people, as you called it, is for bullies. It is an exercise in self-aggrandizement for people with self-esteem issues. If you want to engage me in serious and thoughtful debate, I welcome it. If you want to point and laugh, you are nothing more than a jerk.

Of course, if this person truly believed so, I'd treat them with an air of respect--but I wouldn't leave them to suffer their irrationality. I'd try to reason with them. What demons? How does a food product help that? How do you know?

Sometimes, if I'm in the right mood, I'll help someone out and let them realize that talking to themselves and pretending they have a mystical connection with an invisible, mysterious being that's always watching them and in control of the world is just as delusional as thinking you can summon magic or are haunted by ghosts.

@primoa1970: How is your belief allegedly truth over superstition? Anyone could say something random like that. May the Flying Spaghetti Monster be with us all, and his noodly appendages touch you. Just saying something all the time, pretending like it's fact, and not supplying any real, scientific evidence doesn't make something true. Please, that's ridiculous. That's like the person covered in peanut butter claiming the exact same thing. Just because you claim it doesn't make it any different.

My superstitions will pick on your superstitions.

But if you want to run around all day covered in peanut butter, just don't be surprised if all the dogs, squirrels, etc come trying to lick it all off.

In the meantime, pass the grape jelly ;-}

Oh, by the way, what ARE your superstitions? I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours :-D

The difference is that my beliefs are time-tested, well thought out beliefs. If you could show me some sort of proof, be it ancient writings, scholarly papers, tablets of stone, or an image of God which says peanut butter keeps out the demons, I'd be more inclined to agree with you. All you have is you. I have 2000+ years of belief and the billions of people who have thought about and practiced it.

If you are into smearing peanut butter all over your body and if you think it keeps demons away, then go for it. You might lose a few friends, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Mostly because you understand extraordinarily little about the beliefs you mock. You may not agree with them, and that's your choice, but to make fun of faiths that have been around for 100's if not 1,000's of years is a little arrogant don't you think?

Also, what hanknowaff said.

Ya, and what if the peanut butter people came to your door carrying jars of jiffy?

Actually, if you said that to a true believer, you wouldn't be laughed at.

You would be given knowledge of the power of Jesus Christ to set you free from fear.
