I've heard this said in different ways on different things. If I believe it to be true and in my heart I believe it, it's true to me.

Isn't that statement just the absolute pure definition of ignorance? If it's true to you, thats enough? Isn't truth universal? Wouldn't it need to be true for all?

I can hold the idea that 1+1=3 close to my heart, but really, even if I believe in it and have never been proven wrong, am I truly right? I "believe" I am, I "think" I am, and so far, nothing has proven me wrong, but does that mean I knew?

When someone says that "my belief" is all that matters, in the end, does that not mean one is no longer open to challenge themselves? Challenge others? To debate and logically deduce beliefs until they become unchallengeable? To "delearn"everything?

So, are you delusional to suggest your belief, as long as it's true to you, is truth itself?

Hisgloryisgreat - Yes, I do apply it to those without belief. It really applies to all.

whoever said "jesus" is truth is exactly what my question relates to. Thats a blind statement and many religions, themselves, dispute that.

Christian memb, what you said in your response is exactly the point of my question - did you even read any of it? Absorb any of it? It isn't true to me and you if they are different - one of us, at least, is wrong. We can't both have the same math answer (though we can arrive there in different ways), the answer must be the same and it is not. I can tell as I do not agree with Christianity's beliefs, therefore, they are true to you, not to me, so are they true outside of either of us? They fail logic in so many ways, so, your belief is superceding the universes own logical laws.

That is a very astute statement.

I hope that those to whom truth is true to them don't miss it.

edit:

I hope that your statement is applied to lack of belief also.

There are relatively meaningless "truths" that can be individual, like hair color, etc. But most, if not all, important truths are universal. The claim you point to is similar to the relativistic perspective that no person's opinion is worth more than another. So why go see a doctor when ill, your just as well asking anyone? Noone actually believes this when they say it, which is made clear by their actual behavior, it is just rationalization.

Very Good! now you are on your way...you can't help but to hold fast onto those things that you know to be true... you can't let them go, or turn loose of them untill you have positive proof of something "greater than what you have to replace them" Knowing you "won't let go of them untill you are "totally" "Proven" that what you believe is in fact in "error", and therefore has to be "replaced," ,and, it is impossible to replace what you have untill you have sought out to the inth degree what is or isn't about a particular thing in respect to your belief..because every question has and raises a new doubt that has to be found out...this is called the road to truth..don't give up on it..it gets hard at times, but you hang in there...it's the best way...lol..

I guess the most one could ever say is, "According to all I've learned and what I feel, this is true to me," and encourage others to put in the effort to find out their own personal "truth" as well. For spiritual issues, especially, there is no tangible "proof" either way.

If you believe we're all created equal, at some point we have to respect other people's intellect and soul enough to leave choices of belief up to them.

I think it's just the fact that guys don't wanna be seen with someone ugly. They like to be with someone pretty and a good personality. But. I'm ugly without makeup and my boyfriend is always telling me True beauty is without makeup. And he hates when I put on my makeup and straiten my hair. But I look terrible without it. So. I think it depends on the guy... Jerks=pretty girls. Good/perfect guys= A terrific girl. Don't care about looks. Personality only really matters.

Very true - well the thought that belief is not reality is very true. It can also be dangerous in that while you have bought into self induced delusion, you will not see how your actions affect others nor will you admit that others don't have to be like you.

Belief, spiritual, personal or otherwise is not reality.

the world thinks that what they believe to be true is truth and that is what matters to them. but just cause you feel something true in your heart doesn't make it truth. there is one truth and you can either accept it or deny it but either way you choose,it doesn't make the truth any less true. i think i wrote a confusing statement just then.

running in circles ...

believing is not the same as knowing.

if you belief somthing is true , it is still questionable for you and open to debate.

>>> When someone says that "my belief" is all that matters, in the end, does that not mean one is no longer open to challenge themselves?

no.

Jesus is truth, and only he can set you free from sin. Peace to you.

Yes. That would make you delusional as well as willfully ignorant.
