yes they are and most of the blame should be on the Chinese, the right paint was supplied but it was not used, there was some work that was contracted out and instead of using the given paint they used their own and sold the paint that got for free, it is all about the $$$

Since this whole thing started, China has become extremely pro-active in putting a stop to this.

American manufacturers are putting or have put company reps on the factory floors to make sure the guidelines are met.

Both the American and Chinese manufacturers share guilt equally. Constant pressure from America to keep costs down caused the Chinese to cut corners.

Your answer is, YES, lead and other contaminates exist. Those products have been pulled from the shelves. China products are now safe BUT, I would stay away from China products at the dollar stores for about 6 months to be on the safe side.

It is also a safe bet to say, Chinese products are now being scrutinized and tested like never before.

One thing I want to add, I am 56 years old. When I was a kid, lead based paint was very common. I'm sure I got my dose of led as well as millions of other kids.

Sometimes, in our zeal to keep things safe, we loose sight of our common sense.

The landfills are now filled up with a few billion perfectly good toys from China, all because parents went bazerk, and the news saw a good story and politicians could bash china more.

Well i think the US should not ban Chinese exports just because of a few reports of tainted products. Yes, there were some products that posed a real health concern for the public but that should not be enough to put down Chinas reputation as a long reliable source of export. we've been doing business with china since forever and there were few problems here and there but other countries had similar problems with their products to be imported here too so why should we single out china as a country with low quality products? since hearing of the contamination Chinese manufacturers have step up their safety and inspections of their products so banning products from China that has long has had 99% of imports meeting US quality standards is not going to help anybody.

@RM,

Usually I don't care about your answers. But this time, thumb-up for you.

I believe that criticism is good to China, a country that is undergoing so many social changes. China is still a 3rd world country. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of its products don't meet western safety requirements. But things are changing. Chinese products are getting more hi-tech. Your durable Toyota was assembled with parts made China; your wireless network won't work without tiny circuits made China.... Boycott won’t solve the problem.

As for the question, my answer is yes. They are contaminated with lead at 'American standard'. Kids around the world have been playing with Chinese toys for years, but so far no injury or damage has been reported. US rejected products from all countries for 'safety reasons'. But how come China became the only target? If you had paid attention to the timing of these reports and considered the huge deficit of US government, you would have some clue.

There is nothing wrong with banning products that contain toxic chemicals like lead.

The saddest thing about this last current event topic is how THE CHINESE people were so busy defending their goods that they totally ignored the fact that their KIDS are constantly exposed to these harmful chemicals and could develop serious health issues in the future.

There are actually a small number of Chinese people who are very ashamed of the Chinese response, because it showed a prideful mindset that backs up the government no matter what, and even if the current regulations allow toxic goods to reach their homes and loved ones.

Very sad how so many people here actually act like brain washed zombies who stand by the government at any cost.

The US are not wrong for banning these Chinese goods, and if the Chinese were at all intelligent they would pressure their government to do the same. However the Chinese are not intelligent, most of them grew up playing with toys that contained lead paint.

As long as there are lead in them, US should ban all "Made in China" toys/products. Right now, Malaysia is having a stringent test on ALL PRODUCTS coming in from China. They wanna made sure that it is not tainted for the Malaysian consumers.

China is the manufacturing site for many US company. Many of the goods, including toys are manufactured ACCORDING to US companies' order and specification.

Yes, some of them are. When you have price cutting everywhere, and a lot of subcontracting/out sourcing, quality is being ignored in some way.

Carl_the _truth:

I'm extremely critical of the Chinese government, but you need to stop saying that retarded liberal propaganda. The fact you mentioned might fit the profile of how 1% of the goods here are made here, but the other 99% are made from workers that work normal hours like the blue collars in the US.

Like I said i'm critical of China, but when you say stuff like that you sound like an ignorant liberal jack-a--.
