Cream cheese offers a texture and flavor that makes a dish unique. However, if you are lactose intolerent, you can find some great soy based cream cheese substitutes at Trader Joes and Whole Foods. If you are out of this ingrediant, then try using a mixture of sour cream or plain yogurt, and shredded monteray jack cheese.

You don't say what you are using it in, and it does make a difference. However, these are some items that are close to taste, texture and are often used interchangeably with cream cheese.

Marscapone
Ricotta
small curd cottage cheese
last resort would be sour cream or mayo because they are both considerable tarter and thinner.

Hope this helps!

It depends why you need to sub. If it is for fat, then Neufatchel works great. If it is because you don't like cream cheese, then yogurt or sour cream would be good.
