In my opinion, if I'm walking across a parking lot for example I usually have my mind on where I'm going...like into the store shopping but at the same time for security I'm watching who is around me....being a women you have to be careful who you make eye contact with. The times are different from years ago when you can be friendly with strangers. It's always best to be careful and on the safe side in a public place. It really depends on your where abouts...and the people you are around....like at a college campus where you are surrounded by people you are more familiar with and at the same time SAFETY is always FIRST. In the end go by your inner voice usually you know when you are comfortable in the space with another person.

Eyes of a Stranger.. in caps? Is that a book? A song? A billboard?

If it's just common nouns in question, then the answer is that eye contact is, in the animal kingdom, one sign of aggression. This is true even among primates. I find looking people in the eye very uncomfortable, and being American Indian, it's also culturally viewed as disrespectful.

Not everyone does. But since the eyes are the"windows of the soul" , I guess some people feel protected by not looking at strangers..Personally, it doesn't bother me at all to look at a strangers eyes.

Why do you think that people always turn away from the eyes of a stranger?

I don't turn away.

Also, why is Eyes of a Stranger capitalized?

Is it One of Those Things?

it could be regional. in sum areas if u look someone in the eye its a sign of disrepect and u get killed.

it could have to do w/ tradition. in sum societies not looking a person in the eye shows respect.

it could have to do with modesty. if a woman looks a man in the eye it could give him the wrong impression.

it could be insecurity. someone may not want to look into another's eyes for fear they may see the same thing u see.

Because people are ugly and violent and I have enough problems already than starting some fight with some moron who thinks I'm "dogging" him.

If I'm looking at anyone, I always have in the back of my mind my excuse in case they get pissed and I have to talk my way out of it: "I thought you looked like someone I know."

I don't. I stare people down on the street. Makes em' real uncomfortable. Once, this other guy who wouldn't break the eye-lock with me walked into a street sign. It was the most triumphant thing that had happened to me in months.

I don't, people do that because they are scared, they are cowards, they avoid confrontation, probably like you. They are afraid that something might upset their little apple cart. And there goes their whole world. Like gettin shot and stuff.
