In the Hooper painting Nighthawks there is an dark store across the street. In the otherwise empty front window is an object on a small raised platform that is in the shadow of the window frame. It is the only object left in the window? What does it look like to you?

In the 40's, typewriters, cash registers, sewing and adding machines, all had that same general shape. It can be anything you imagine or want it to be, including a shop cat...lol

Although Compass Ross is almost always right in this case it looks like to me she isn't. If you can find a higher res image of 'Nighthawks At The Dinner' and enlarge it several times you might see it as I see it.

First off, it is sitting on it's own pedestal in front of the counter. Cash registers were never sat on top of a raised pedestal in front of or behind the counter. They are always sitting, because of their weight, on the counter itself. What it looks like to me is a display, the type of display with 'steps' designed to show as many objects as possible from different levels. In this case I'm pretty sure it is a display rack designed for and holding jewelry, either rings or watches or both.
