scent

Probably a combination of senses, like the rest of us-- they may depend more on scent than we do, but sight & sound come into play as well.
I agree with the person who notes that cats recognize the sound of their humans' car. Our do this & they can tell when my SO is coming home by the sound of his footsteps (they know it's him instead of someone else walking up). I'm told they also recognize my footsteps.
When ppl visit, our cats can tell frequent visitors from ppl who have only been there once or twice. Other ppl's cats recognize me when I visit as well.
Sight does count somewhat-- when I'm wearing my 'cat ears' cats (our & other ppl's) will approach me with their tails fluffed out, but *only* the 1st time they see the ears-- which they seem to remember for a really long time. This is not only funny to see, but it shows how smart cats are & how they depend on various senses.

I've found that they go more by vocal and body shapes than with faces.

When one of mine was outside and he thought I was inside, I walked towards him and he was ready to run, thinking I was a stranger. I stopped and just stood there, the wind was towards me so he couldn't smell me, and he took a long time looking, trying to figure out if it WAS me because far as he knew I was inside. It was only when I said something that he completely relaxed and came forward.

I've walked by ours by the window and they seemed to recognize me, but inside my car they don't recognize me out the window.

I'd say by voice, yes, definately. Then scent and body language, and faces last.
