My son has been in Baghdad with the Army's 1st Cav for a year.
As parents each day is very nerve wracking as you wonder what he is doing, but he emails us often and is now back in the green zone so we feel a little better. He is well trained and doing what he wanted to do, but we really look forward, of course, to January when his tour will be over and he will be coming home.
He would have been home by now, but was extended 3 months.
I feel for all the parents who have troops in both places, and pray for their safety.

I have several friends and acquaintances from my years in the military that are now or were serving in Iraq, Afghanistan other war zones and the real fact is very few of the hundreds of thousands of men and women that go over there are killed or wounded. A large percentage of the deaths are from accidents and miss adventure.
When the Pentagon got hit on 9/11 I checked the death rooster to see if my ex-wife was on the list, she wasn't.
Death lists are what you want to make them.

i'm oftentimes anti-conflict, yet i've got self assurance that our troops ought to stay in those components because of the mess they're in, and of course that is a tragedy on each occasion they're killed in accountability. i did no longer help going into Iraq interior the 1st place... I did help flushing the Taliban from Afghanistan. I hate conflict, yet I do think of that we've not got any decision yet to maintain up the combat at this factor. when I qualify as a doctor, I plan on transforming into a member of the forces to assist out over there.

I know this is just cold numbers, but overall, only about 1% of all soldiers sent to anywhere get wounded, let alone killed.
When I was in Iraq, my unit had 20,000. Out of that 20,000, we had 87 killed and 157 wounded.
Depending on his job, that percentage gets larger or smaller.
The media and a lot of politicains are doing a good job of making those places seem more deadly then they are since they focus on those casualties.
I am sure he will be fine.

My fiance has a college friend that is deployed to Iraq in the US Army. She tries to ignore the media reports, but I know she diligently checks her email and myspace several times a day to see if he's posted anything. He always leaves a message or sends an email before and after each mission, and each one is more and more disturbing to read than the last. At times, it's like watching a mental health breakdown in slow motion, and we can only imagine the issues he'll face if he comes back, his leave has been delayed 3 times in the last year already.

I know a lot of guys over there now. In fave a couple weeks ago a guy I served with was killed in Afganistan. I hear about it on the news, and yeah I do get a little curious to know if it were anyone I know or not. but when I do hear about some getting killed or injured, rather if I know them or not, I feel some thing for them because I've been in their position.

My husband is currently deployed for the 4th time to the gulf region and I pray for his safety from the minute he leaves our front door until he once again crosses the threshold. I try not to follow the news too closely on this subject. After 15 years of marriage, I have learned that it only serves to drive me insane.

I'm always a nervous wreck but I know they are trained and prepared the best they can be. My husband would find it an honor to die that way though so in case the worst happens at least he died doing something he loves.

My friend's daughter was in Iraq. As was her fiance, who I don't personally know. They have both come home recently but there isn't a day that goes by when I'm not wondering how many people who I've never known, have died over there, that particular day.

Several young men from our small community have been killed in Iraq so each and every death comes with more pain.
