What, if any, difference is there between anise and fennel, as it relates to cooking. If anybody can provide a link that will show pictures of the two plants so I can tell the difference, that would be great...

They are from the same FAMILY of plants, but they are NOT the same plant. Fennel has its own seeds, different from anise seed.

"Fennel is truly a vegetable and should not be confused with the herb, sweet anise. Even though they share a similar mild sweet licorice flavor, fennel comes from an entirely different plant. "

Completely unrelated. Whenever Fennel is referred to "Sweet Anise" it is a mis-labeling. Anise is a member of the parsley family in which Fennel is not. Fennel is a sweeter and more delicate. They are believed to be similar due to the resemblance of taste to licorice. Your best bet is to go to your local garden center and get a true look at the plants either by the center growing them or seed packets

Anise is used in licorice. Anise is an annual; fennel is a perennial.

In cooking, the seed is used in both cases and both have a licorice taste, Anise is stronger in flavor and has smaller seeds.

Both are used as after meal mouth fresheners.

Anise is what ouzo is made from, while fennel is one of the ingredients in the original recipes for Absinthe.

They both taste bad.

No, wait. That's a similarity, I guess.
