I bought a bottle that exp in 2008, yet there is another that exp in 2011... does that really mean that one has been sitting on the shelf for 2 years?

When do they (specifically Vitamins C) begin to lose their quality from being old?

Not necessarily. There are a number of vitamin companies that have expiration dates on their products that are farther out than the normally recommended expiration of 2-3 years (oftentimes you'll see them at Walmart or other discount stores and tend to only be really good when they are new and fresh). It's possible that the bottle expiring in 2008 has been on the shelf for a couple years if it's the same brand and same product as the 2011 expiration, but if it's a different product or brand, it's likely not THAT old.

In general, supplements start to lose their potency by the expiration date, but in the cases of regular vitamins (C and the B vitamins especially), they are still mostly effective for quite some time after that because of the high potency of them to start with.
You could technically take any vitamin or herb that is NOT in a liquid form (meaning capsules and tablets only) a couple years or so after the expiration, but they won't do as much good. You should NOT take any liquid vitamin/supplement after the expiration date, though.

After that date they officially are of less quality. Sometimes the dates are just guidelines to be secure that nobody will get ill, but a lot of tablets are still fine after their best before date. You may find that those tablets have not been on the shelf so long, just that the company has a different policy on when things are still 'fresh' and safe to use.

yes, vitamins past their sellby date are still good, but have started to lose potency. I hope that bottle has not been on the shelf that long!

they get old when they are normally one or two months before expiry date itself
