need help getting permit?

do i just go to the dmv, show them my birth certificate, and they hand me a permit? what do i do, and where do i go?

Type your State and DMV into the searchbar. You will find all the information you need to know. Most require a test to obtain the permit. If you are under 18, you will probably need your parents signiture also. These papers are obtained at the DMV.
