Since most evil and good Commanders want to capture their enemies and punish them.
I'm asking because of a strategy game I was just playing and also because I've heard it said in movies etc.

Because that phrase is restricted to fantasy games and the movies. It has no connection to real life.

In modern warfare they don't and outside of the movies it would be highly unlikely as that would be an illegal order and a violation of the Geneva Convention opening both the commander and the troops carrying out the order to be tried as war criminals. Has it happend? Probably it has; because of situation and other considerations. The paratrooper shooting the Germans as "they tried to escape" in Band of Brothers is based on an actual occurrence. There has always been questions on them trying to escape but the situation was the paratroopers had no manpower to spare to guard prisoners so make judgment; only one person knows and as late as the making of that movie refuses to answer questions about it and is left unresolved by the movie. The Marines and Army both were hesitant to take Japanese prisoners because they had a tendency to carry hidden grenades and use it to kill themselves and those capturing them. So in modern warfare not really done. Prior yes it was because you had to feed prisoners, guard prisoners and unless you were nobility or high up you knew nothing useful; besides no rules and who cared about the commoners.

in the real military no one says that..stop watching all those movies. And we dont all take prisoners, we take people for questioning and then they are realeased, unless they are Alquaida. Punish them..a few asses treat prisoners like crap and now the whole army is stereotyped..ask someone who wrks at Guatamo Bay, these prisoners are as bad as psychotic murderers. So dont feel too bad.

It is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice to issue such and order in the US Military.
Taking prisoners is a good thing, we don't want to kill anybody, just get them to stop fighting. Kind of like arresting them.
I'd tell ya more but it just might compromise the mission of troops in the field.

When your in combat and you come up on some of other men in you platoon or company who were capture then kill there body's mutilated" that when you may hear take no prisoners. it is not in the form of an order. and you may not be able to take care of prisoners it all depends on the situation at the time of the action. it will never be in the form of official order

You wouldnt take prisoners if you wanted to push through resistance very fast. Taking prisoners takes people off the front lines. To process, guard and escort the prisoners. Warlords of Asia (Gehngis Khan's) used to do that or the Tartars. They didnt want people sometimes they just wanted your stuff.

Trust me, IF they say "take no prisoners" then they don't take any. All of the enemy are killed and you won't hear anything about it. Soldiers have to do as they are told and they do it without thought. Been there done that, the part about doing what I was told to do that is.

Its something from the movies and sounds gung-ho. There were references to it in ancient times, but not commanders recently used it.
