They can look, but why do they interrupt my enjoyment of food to discuss my eating. I think it's impolite. I answer them, but haven't figured out what to say politely to make them stop. What do you think?

Open your mouth while you still have food in it so they can see it all mushed on your tongue. NOBODY will ask you again!

I can feel you on this one. I work with a lady that ALWAYS comes into my cubicle whenever I eat lunch at my desk. She will ask me what I'm eating, where I got it, who cooked it (if it's brought from home) and any thing else she can ask. She will then stand right next to my chair looking down at my lunch while I'm trying to eat. I can't eat with someone standing over me, so I usually move it aside and not touch it till she leaves. She won't take a hint and I don't want to hurt her feelings. I am going to star this question and see what advice you get. maybe I can use it too.

When they ask you either say "food" with a smile so they think you are making a joke. Or angle the plate towards them with a smile so they get a better look. If you do it enough times maybe they will stop asking you a question they already now the answer to.

LOL! i do get what you mean! i think people mainly ask when they are sat near you eating to...this is because they want to hide the noise of chewing and swallowing loudly...
other than that, go and eat elsewhere at a time you know others wont be there eating to....
failing that, get a paper, pretend your engrossed and they wont interrupt and if they do ignore them...

Pick the plate up off the table and show them while you chew your food. Or you could say, "It's a dish called MYOB! I guess you've never heard of it!" Some times you have to be rude to be left alone. It sucks but what can you do?
To get a girl off my back when she asked me for what seemed like a million times, I just told her it was left overs from what her boy friend bought for me last night! LOL

it's totally impolite! I agree with you.
if you want to say something polite to them then i can't help you i don't believe in that stuff. if you want to be a little more agressive and make your point in order to be sure that those donkey shaggers never bother you again you can always stand and yell in their face "what am i a ****** menu?"

I suggest eating in a secluded area. If you can't do that, then put on some super huge headphones and rock out while chowing down.

I always eat lunch privately. I hate it too. Here you are trying to eat and people feel that's their opportunity to find a new buddy to talkto about everything under the sun.

Not sure I get why this is a problem.

Certainly finish chewing what's in your mouth, and swallow it, before answering.

You can always say "food."

Or show them by tilting the bowl or plate.

Just answer the question. It's called small talk. You don't have to engage in a conversation about it, but answering their one question (usually it's the only one asked) will help keep you from looking like a jerk.

Any other questions they ask, answer in monosyllables.

Why not just tell them? I cook and take to work my own soups, chili, etc and I'll get asked what I'm eating because they think it smells good.
