as those of you who have ben answering my questions know ,ive only taken up golf recently and am self taught for the most part .
i was having som problems with ball srikeing ,so i put a cote of auto primer on the face of a few irons to get an idea where on the club i was conecting with the ball. i found this also helped to get spin on the ball where it gave the club face a bit more grab .

If i was to use the clubs this way in game play would it be a violation of the rules ,and if not would you feel cheated

I must say, you do ask a lot of questions. The only thing you haven't tried is spell check.

I would get fitted for your clubs, sometimes the angle of the lie of your clubs will certainly affect how solid you hit the ball. They will put a piece of tape on the bottom and have you hit a ball off of plexi glass to determine how much they need to bend the angle to fit your swing. Include an hour lesson with your club fitting to get an idea of what you need practice on. If you are serious about getting better spend the money on the lesson. Beleive me it will save you alot of time and frustration. As far as the paint, I would strip it off as it is an outside benefit in the rules of golf they even regulate how the grooves are cut. Don't get sucked into gimmicks, practice what your teacher says and maybe pick up some books. Harvey Penick has good books that keep it simple. Also, Have fun!!!

Applying a foreign substance to the club or ball for the purpose of influencing performance is illegal, and would get a DQ in a pro tournament.

You can wash your club with something other than water, as long as you wipe it off. Ball washers (and club washers) on the course usually have some detergent in them.

Golf shops sell "impact labels" (or tape) that you can put on your club while practicing. It will show you where you are hitting the ball.

There is also a new product called "Golf Dust" that does the same thing, but wipes right off. (See link).

According to the USGA, applying an substance to your clubface is against the rules. Now with that being said you are allowed to clean the face of the clubs, but only with water. Also in a sanctioned tournament the official that walks with each group can check at random that the players and their caddies are only cleaning their clubs with Water.
Another helpful way to see where you are aming contact is to put a piece of masking tape over the face and when the ball makes contact it leaves an imprint on the tape.
Good luck and keep your head down
