No, and I have been in that situation, last year my 6 year old daughter who was in 1st grade at the time got off the school bus at a friends house so she could play with her. Her plan was to go to her friends house and call me from there, good for a 16 year old not a 6 year old. Thank God her friends mom brought her straight to me, after the tears and fear wore off I spanked her and she has never done it again, so no you are not wrong for taking away his TV, he got off easy in my opinion!

I agree with Jen A. There was a problem with why the teacher lets him leave. My five year old wears a tag on her back pack (via the school) telling all teachers that she takes a bus home. They should have areas where your child has to go. Walkers leave on a certain side, bus riders in a different, car riders leave out the front, things like that. You say you punished him for walking home and I say that's OK too. He needs to know if there is any question on what to do, then ask a teacher. Besides, not letting him watch TV for a night was probably a good thing.

WHOA!
Who ALLOWED the kid to walk home from school by himself????
The school should not have let him walk hom alone when they knew he was being picked up. A 5yr old kid should not be leaving school alone and unsupervised.
I think you overdid it with the punishment a wee bit if this was a one-time thing. He is 5 and didn't see the big picture.
I would talk to the school and ask what they are doing---what if something had happened to him? He could have been hit by a car and you wouldn't even know.

Was anyone at home when he came home? How far is the school. I think talking to him and explaining the dangers was a great idea. I think he is just testing his independence. He is too young to walk home, but atleast you know in the event of an emergency he knows how to get home. Does his school not have a policy that they send the child home the exact same way everday unless they have notes or calls from the parents?

Mean Old Mother = MOM
No, you are not wrong to punish a child for making a bad choice by not following pre-established procedures. Have you asked at the school why they let him out unaccompanied when he is usually picked up? For me that would be an important question to get answered.

you were not wrong. no TV is a mild punishment. You should call the school and find out why they allowed him to leave by himself. If the school gives you the run around or it happens again call child protective services on the school for neglecting to watch the kids properly.

Not at all. You have to impress on him the gravity of what he did and how he should not do it again. Recently in the news here a five year old took a bus home. Impressive but SO MUCH could have happened.

You should have punished him. Have you contacted your school, children who are aged 5 should not be allowed to walk themselves home.

My six year old daughter did that too last year with her seven year old friend - I nearly had a heart attack! My dad's response was the most effective with her - he told her not to leave her brain behind, to think before she followed someone else! She said that she felt very silly!
