i have a sony dsc h9 digital camera with 15x optical zoom. sony sells an accessory by name tele lens with 1.5x. If i attach the same to my digi cam, it make my digital cam zoom to 16.5x or 22.5x. Please clarify. Does it affect the clarity of the images adversely???

It would make it 22.5x, technically. It takes the focal length of the lens and multiplies it by 1.5, or in other words, 50% more focal length is achieved.

Although those extender lenses, especially the Sony ones, are made with somewhat higher-quality glass, some image degradation can be expected because you are placing more glass, and thus more opportunities to soften/distort the image, in front of the lens. I can't comment as to how much to expect, but I would expect some image degradation.

I'm pretty sure it multiplies as that is how my telescope and microscopes worked.
