We have a 4 yr. old rottie and if we put her outside she'll bark at everything.. Which if you have neighbors can be very, very annoying.. After trying many different techniques and nothing working.. We finally had to resort to a bark collar to keep the peace... If sends out a "shock" via a 9volt battery to keep the barking under control... It has a 5 sec. time delay between barks and since she wears it all the time.. The battery is currently dead but, as long as she has it on she's been very, very good... However, with a puppy I wouldn't recommend that.. When does he bark? At night- when you are away? If that's the case at night if he goes into a crate put a night light on and put a small radio in the room... Sometimes they just get lonely... Make sure he has toys and things to occupy his time when you aren't around.. Also.. DO NOT give-in a visit him late night if he's barking .. That's setting up bad behavior.. Because he will learn that if he barks you will come ! That's NOT what you want at 3am... Also, make sure before you go to bed that he goes out a couple times to do his business.. If you can wear him out before it's time for bed.. Good luck

I have a basset and if any breed barks more...it's a darn basset. I use the same word "quiet" every time and I don't yell it. To him that means that I'm barking too so he will more. I get his attention and say quite in a low stern voice. When he's quiet for 5 seconds and praise the crap out of him and give him treats. It helps...sometimes. If he doesn't listen I spray water from a spray bottle at him...not in his face and he HATES it and is scared of it. So after that he usually lays down and sulks. After a while, I'll come over and cuddle with him. I've also heard to try citronella collars. Do some research about them. Good luck and wish me some too!

Roll up few pages of a newspaper. The next time your puppy barks say "shhh!!!" and show him the rolled newspaper. If the puppy keeps barking then hit him with it. Few pages of newspaper won't hurt him at all but it will make enough noise to taking out of that state of mind. Keep repeating this, the puppy will associate barking = "shhh!!!" = newspaper hit. In few days a "shhh!!" will do the work.
Reward him playing with him once he stops barking after a "shhh!!". This will complete the conditioned reflex.

give him plenty of stimulation and things to do. if you arent already, you need to work on crate training as well. if he's barking and you're yelling at him, youre only encouraging the problem...if he's barking at inapropriate times just ingnore him, he's looking for a response and if youre yelling at him, he;s getting one....once he is quiet, reward him with praise or a treat....but you've gotta understand that puppies bark....so he's gonna bark some, you've gotta teach him when it's appropriate and when it's not. ....and on an unrelated note, please get him neutered.

We watch this show called "It's me or the dog" about this lady who goes to houses where they have unruly dogs and teaches the owners how work with the dogs to make them nice dogs. She's amazing.
Here's a link to a page where she teaches people about positive training:
http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/its-me-or-the-dog/positive-training/positive-training.html
She can make the worst barking dogs really nice so a puppy would be easier to train since they don't have as many hang ups as adult dogs.

Do NOT hit him or yell at him. Positive reinforcement works well -- reward him when he is quiet, ignore him when he isn't.
But since he's just a baby, he probably just wants your attention. Play with him more...
