Did you agree to stay with your great-grandmother so your grandmother could visit your mother? If so, then just grit your teeth and do it for one afternoon. It won't kill you. I realize that there are probably a dozen more interesting things to do than to stay with your great-grandmother in a flea-infested house, but why not take your great-grandmother out for lunch or to the park or something, and give her a nice afternoon?

It's good karma. Don't care if you've been sick, or if you have plans with your friends -- family first, dear.

Be honest - Tell her you made other plans (several weeks in advance or whenever you made those plans if that is the case). But try and suggest some sort of compromise so that you are not breaking your word to her. Is there a way you could help out first and go out with your friends after helping out or go out with friends first and make it back in time to help out, or even go out with your friends on an earlier day or later date, if possible.

Keep your promise, its important, especially with your family history. Clean her house while you are there. And yes, it really is bad.
