It happens mainly at night, but it occurs during the day also. I know that it could possibly be heartworm, but she was tested last week for it and tested negative so is it a high possiblity that it is kennel cough?

Sounds like it. Take her in to the vet, they'll prescribe some antibiotics if necessary.

Another thing that can cause a pup to cough is a severe infestation of worms, basically round worms but some of the others could affect the dog in this manner as well.

We have always used a bit of cough syrup for children when getting in a rescue with a case of kennel cough. We take it to the vet, get meds for it and give it a bit of the cough syrup to help relieve the coughing while they recover. Only one that is for children though, too many of the adult formulas have alcohol in them.

It definitely sounds like kennel cough. My puppy had it about two months ago and it almost sounds like they are wheezing. You should take care of it right away because it can turn into pneumonia. My puppy started out with kennel cough then a respiratory infection and finally pneumonia. I had to leave her in the hospital an entire week. Make sure its eating properly and take her to the vet immediately, untreated can become very dangerous.

This sounds like collapsing trachea, which is most common in smaller breeds. Collapsing trachea can cause "reverse sneezing" and coughing/wheezing. It is often worse at night or brought on my exertion or excitement.

When benedryl is prescribed, it's generally because it makes dogs sleepy and calms them. When the dog relaxes, the coughing and sneezing lessen.

If the cough sounds like a goose, it could be collapsing trachea. Extreme cases need surgical correction. You need to check with your vet.

Good Luck :-)

P.S. Kennel cough can take several months to go away so don't rule that out... but again, talk to your vet.

I had the same problem with my dog a few weeks back - it turned out to be just a cold. But it's always a good idea to go to the vet just to be safe. Could be Kennel Cough, a cold, or even allergies.

yes it sounds like it. When she is out playing and runing around if she coughs then it is kennel cough it does sound like they are choking and u do need to get him/her to the vet they will give the puppy some med to take home and give to her/him. It last for about a week or so it also depends on the puppy. make sure the puppy is not around any other puppies she/he can give it to them.

If it was kennel cough, your vet should have caught it last week, my dogs act like they are choking and I make them drink water.

I have a small dog that does this " backward sneeze " bit. Most small dogs do this, I spoke with the vet about and he told me that it is common but could be allergies. He told me to give him a quarter of a benadryl. Usually the lil sessions only last a few minutes but if it is ongoing try the benadryl.
