Pear upside down cake, but made with ginger cake instead of just plain is absolutely delicious. Pears and ginger go really well together. For a change though, Jamie Oliver in one of his earlier books had a great savoury recipe for pears. I think he just chopped them up with potatoes and other veg and mixed them around with oil and herbs, and baked them in the oven with pork chops on top. I never followed the exact recipe but pork and pears made a great combination.

Your upside down cake sounds nice.
You could also try
Apple or Pear Slices
Make a victoria sponge cake mixture, spread on the bottom of a rectangular tin, decorate the sponge with sliced pears and sprinkle with sugar (brown preferably) and ground cinnamon, and bake in the oven. Can be eaten warm or cool, cut into fingers or squares.
I usually use apples for this, but have done it a couple of times with pears.

This was in O magazine:
Pear Upside-Down Cake
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
14 tablespoons (1 3/4 stick) butter, softened
3 firm pears (about 1 1/2 pounds), cored and cut into 1/4-inch wedges
2 cups cake flour (not self-rising)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2/3 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons fresh or dried cranberries
Preheat the oven to 325°. Cut a piece of parchment paper to fit the bottom of a 10-inch ovenproof skillet; set aside. In the skillet over medium-high heat, stir the brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons butter until melted. Add the pears. Sauté them until fork-tender and start to brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Pour the pears and the juices into a large bowl and allow to cool slightly. Clean the skillet.
In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon and ginger. In a large bowl, with a mixer set on high speed, beat the remaining 12 tablespoons butter and the granulated sugar until fluffy. Reduce the speed to low; beat in the eggs and vanilla until well blended. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour. Beat just until blended.
Coat the skillet with vegetable spray or butter. Place the parchment paper in the skillet and arrange the pears in overlapping circles. Pour the remaining pear juice mixture over the pears and scatter the cranberries. Carefully spoon the batter over the fruit. Using a rubber spatula, spread the mixture evenly. Bake the cake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 45 to 55 minutes. Remove the cake from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Run a thin knife around the edges to loosen from the sides of the skillet. Invert the cake onto a serving plate. Remove the parchment paper. Serve the cake by itself or with ice cream, whipped cream, or crème fraîche.
Recommended variations: Apples and cinnamon: Substitute 3 peeled apples for the pears. When sautéing the apples in the skillet, add 1 additional tsp. of cinnamon.
Pumpkin and maple syrup: Peel and seed a small pumpkin and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices 3 to 4 inches long. Substitute maple syrup for the brown sugar and sauté the pumpkin meat and 1/4 of the seeds 6 to 8 minutes, until fork-tender.

Pears are actually apples. No kidding; they can cross-fertilize each other. So look for recipes that call for apples, and substitute pears.
Pear pie is wonderful. Pear butter. Pear cider. Pear pan dowdy.
My (late) first wife grew up with a wild pear tree that produced fruit similar to Seckle Pears, only, she said, more sweet and wonderful. Two weeks after we bought a house, my wife decided we should plant some apple trees and graft from that old tree, so we could perpetuate that variety. Drove down to her folks' farm to find that the tree had been hit by a twister the previous season, and her dad had cut it all up and burned it in his fireplace. She was mad enough to spit nails - but you couldn't blame her dad. He wasn't responsible for the weather....
Pears were always a tender subject around her from then on....

Pear Crumble - Same as apple crumble but use pears.
Poached Pears in "alcohol of choice" - Skin and simmer pears in a liquid of "brandy" and honey until just soft enough to pierce with a knife. Serve with ice cream and the cooked down remaining liquid.

you can make an upside down pudding with pears and use a chocolate cake mix instead of a vanilla sponge. My mum used to make if for us when we were children. I also like pears poached in red wine.
