I was a closet atheist for a long time. It's hard to live in the bible belt and be "out". It can cause trouble to be an outspoken atheist in some parts of the country. So are there atheists in the closet? I'm sure there are, and I think you might be surprised at how many there are.

Witches and wiccans often come out of the broom closet. As one of the LGBTs in the world and atheist, I go in the closet and come out often, especially on laundry day. I'm lucky that my new house has big enough closets to "hang out" in or everything would be a heap on the floor.

I am sure that for professional reasons many atheists do not advertise their feelings.
Atheists hang out here to raise the level of intelligence. Obviously, I am not an atheist.

I'm "in the closet" to several members of my family. I just don't want the headache of having them know I'm an atheist--they'll try to save me.

I hang out here in the atheist closet because I don't want to hurt my parents, I don't want to offend my friends who are highly religious, and I don't want to damage my reputation and occupational prospects (I live in America)

I 'hang out' here because I want religious people to know that I'm on to their fascist agenda. You can't pull the wool over my eyes. The same goes for the socialists. I would like to see a day when our culture is dominated by science and reason and not religion and socialist mysticism.
