The proper way to hang toilet paper is in the underhand fashion, with the back against the wall.
I really don't know why there has to be a "proper" way to hang toilet paper, though. I always hang it in the overhand fashion (aka, the "improper" way) because I can't get ahold of it if it's hung in the proper way! There's nothing more aggravating than trying to get ahold of that stuff and just having the roll spin around and around...
I'd have to say that whatever way you want to hang TP in your own home should be the "proper" way. If hanging it in the overhead fashion is easier for you, then have at it. I'd rather be able to get some toilet paper in my hand after a midnight trip to the potty than be proper. When it comes right down to it, my bathroom is for my use.

I can't believe they let this crap on the net. I will say this slowly so everyone can understand. The...toilet...paper...is...easier...to...rip...when...you...hang...it...underhand. Try it and you will see. This is FACT. If you use the roll itself as leverage you can rip upwards with one hand thus keeping the other hand free for whatever. Try the one hand rip thing from the overhand position and all you will get is the TP in a big pile on the floor unripped from the roll. BTW, I know people like to say "overhand must be correct. That's how hotels do it". to that I can only say that hotels also all too often don't clean their rooms well enough. Besides, who decided to make hotels the TP experts anyway? In closing, you can hang your TP any way you want or even not at all but if you hang it any way other than underhand then you are not doing it the most sensible way. You're welcome.

I resemble that remark!
It's true, that if you're a male, the correct way to hang a roll of toilet paper is to leave the cardboard roll on the holder, and just set the new roll on the side of the sink or the bathtub, or better yet, just out of reach of someone sitting on the stool.
However, on the rare occasion that I actually DO change it, I place the toilet paper roll so that it comes over the top.

I don't think it really matters, personally. It's just easier if the paper comes over the top of the roll IMO.
However, I'd like to point out that hanging the paper BEHIND the roll deters cats from playing with it (anyone remember the TP commercial where the cats kept pawing at the roll until the competition roll ran out?)

We hang the paper down the back, through fact i like the way that looks. I additionally locate it 'extra straightforward' to get purely the quantity needed, and the load of the roll makes it extra straightforward to rip. i've got in no way seen it wanting any extra beneficial 'dealing with' nonetheless, and might desire to a minimum of evaluate that ... yet I doubt i'm going to alter the way I hang my TP, on the grounds it quite is the way I even have consistently hanged it, this is the way my mom and grandmother hanged it that way, too. this is extremely an 'exciting undertaking' to think of roughly through fact the recent year is coming and we are making some mandatory transformations in our existence, nonetheless. thank you for you question ... and in case you return to my house, I do make an apology for haning my TP 'backwards,' yet I do ask you to go away it that way, through fact while it hangs to the front i bypass BALLISTIC and might desire to alter it even until now i will 'bypass' (possibly all of us choose upright rolls, so there is way less subject the two way ... ).

My husband also cannot seem to figure this out.
I prefer the end over the top of the roll *unless* the holder is very high in comparison to the toilet, and then I prefer it hanging down the back where I can actually reach it.

LOL Excellent point about the male/female thing. My husband did it the wrong way, and heard from me every time about it, so he started just putting the toilet paper on the bathroom counter for me to replace myself later.
I do it where it comes over the top. It's easier to get to, and easier to tear off, and who wants to make things more difficult for themselves when they're on the toilet???
I get my way on this because as the only female in a house of males (my husband and two sons), I use the most toilet paper.
LOL Steno... makes a great point. And yes, I did know that.
Did you know a toddler can have even more fun with toilet paper, water, body wash AND toothpaste? Blue globs with bubbles all over the bathroom floor.

If you have a toddler, have it come out from the bottom.
That way they can't entertain themselves by "patting" the roll to make it spin and watching the piles of TP accumulate.
Then playing with said TP - and water.
Did you know if you mix water and toilet paper, that it can dry in glue-like blobs all over the bathroom?
Otherwise it is a matter of personal preference.

I learned (from an etiquette class--yes they even taught about tp) that it should go over the top because then the person using the toilet paper can pull out across the lap instead of down near the germy toilet.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way. However, my husband is insistant that it be over the top and i have no idea why he is so intent on this. So, now i refuse to change the toilet paper and leave it for him!
