When I was a child, we had to take our candy to the hospital to be xrayed for razor blades this was back in the 80's but have times gotten worse. How many parents plan on taking their children trick or treating?

Times aren't worse. News coverage of rare events is bigger and more sensationalized because fear sells.

Almost all reports of razors and pins in apples, etc. have proven to be hoaxes. And most of the rest have been non-random, i.e. targetted at a specific person.

Take your kid trick-or-treating. Look for obvious tampering, then relax and let him/her pig out on the once-a-year candy free for all like a kid should be able to.

Take your child only to people who you trust homes. If you don't know many people or if it isn't enough start checking your local entertainment adds starting in October. Just about every town now haves some kind of local Halloween party on Halloween night so children can safely Trick or Treat. Most of these parties consist of Trick or Treating from the many booths they have set up at the party, and costume contest. It is a safe and easy way to have fun. I live close to Louisville KY the zoo their has trick or treating and so does the amusement parks. So keep an eye out you will find something.

I think that it is totally safe. I plan on taking both of my kids 2 and 3 years old trick or treating this year. I of course am going to watch them like a hawk and not let them run around in the street. Where we go, all of the neighbors come out and the streets are filled with kids of all ages. I examine all of their candy and leave the rest for a rainy day. I think we should be more concerned about kidnappers and crazy drivers then razorblades in the candy.

Around my area the malls do trick or treating for kids and it's much safer than being out on the street knocking on neighbors doors that you don't know... I take my toddler but I make sure that I check anything she eats and don't let her have hard candy because it's a choking hazard... She if there is a mall close by that is offering trick or treating for children, it's a lot of fun and safer!

My son is 3.5 and I have taken him trick or treating for 2 years this will be his 3rd. I only take him to people I know and he gets plenty of treats from them. I also live in a small town with 1200 people and have lived here all of my life. I know most of the people living in the area. If you live in a large town I would suggest looking for a carnival that is put on by a local school or boys and girls club. This is a safe place for your child to wear a costume and play games for treats. Good Luck and have FUN!

I don't remember taking any trips to the hospital for xraying lol?! That seems a bit much, my son and daughter will both be going out, of course. Careful inspection upon opening a candy will do the trick.

I have a young child also, so I understand your concern. I take my daughter, although I am super careful that she does not even touch anything until I inspect it first. I try to stick to familiar neighborhoods also. Trick or treating is one of the few things that has not really changed as the years have gone by. So I would just be careful, have fun and keep this tradition going. Must the most important thing is and I will say it again is HAVE FUN!

Yes it's safe as long as you make it safe. Hold the childs hand the whole time. Don't let them run off. As for the candy safety issue...our local sheriffs department offers parents to bring the candy in to be checked free of charge. Don't let them eat ANY of the candy before it has been checked. Have a safe and spooky halloween!

I took my son trick or treating last Oct and he had just turned one. I am going to take him this year too. When I get home I just check all the candy throughly. I am 25 and since I have been going trick or treating I have never had a problem.

Honestly, I take my kids trick or treating because it's fun for them, not because of the candy they score. I think this year we will go early and collect candy and then hand it out to the other kids that come to the door later. Then my kids can eat the candy that I have purchased.
