1: Peter Saltwood can paint 140 doors in 7 hours, while Carl Kepler can paint 42 doors in 4 hours. Who can paint doors faster, Peter or Carl? Peter paints at a rate of 140/7 or 20 doors per hour Carl paints at a rate of 42/4 or 10.5 doors per hour The answer is Peter. #2: 18 children is to 30 bicycles as 3 children is to 5 bicycles (write as a fraction, please write it like (1/2) = (1) a) 3/30 = 5/18 b) 18/3 = 30/5 c) 18/30 = 30/3 d) 18/30 = 3/5 18/30 = 3/5 If you divide the fraction on the left by 6 (both the numerator and denominator), you get 3/5, so you know the answer is correct. The answer is D #3 The mosquito population within a defined area is estimated at 45 million. Due to weather conditions, it is projected that this population will increase by 80%. Find the increase and the projected population. a)increase: 36 million mosquitos projected population: 9 million mosquitos b) increase: 3600 million mosquitos projected population: 3555 million mosquitos c) increase: 3600 million mosquitos; projected population: 3645 million mosquitos d) increase: 36 million mosquitos projected population: 81 million mosquitos 45,000,000 x .80 = 36,000,000 so the increase is 36 million 45,000,000 + 36,000,000 = 81,000,000 (81 million) The answer is D # 4: The enrollment at a local college increased 8% over last year's enrollment of 900. Find the current enrollment a)1620 students b)908 students c)972 students d)72 students 8% of 900 is 72 (.08 x 900 = 72), so the current enrollment is 900 + 72 = 972 The answer is C #5: Find the amount of increase and the percent increase if the original amount is 340 and the new amount is 544. a)204; 60% b)204; 70% c)204; 55% d) 204; 160% The amount increase is calculated by simply subtracting 340 from 544 (544 - 340 = 204) The percent increase is found by dividing 204 (the additional amount) by 340 (the original amount) (240/340 = .60 or 60%) The answer is A #6: Find the amount of increase and the percent increase if the original amount is 270 and the new amount is 351. a)81; 130% b)81; 40% c)81; 25% d)81; 30% Solving the same way as the previous problem, 351 - 270 = 81 81/270 = .30 or 30%) The Answer is D problem 7: The number of video stores in a region recently decreased from 128 to 77. Find the percent decrease. a)39.8% b)151% c)60.2% d)66.2% Very similar to the 2 preceding problems, but since there is a DECREASE we need to subtract: 128 - 77 = 51 51/128 = .398 or 39.8% The Answer is A

It means there is more time for the teacher to deal with students, as she has less students now. The ratio, for example, could be 20 to 1. (1 teacher for each 20 students). To decrease the amount (the ratio), say for example it has dropped from 20 students to one teacher, to 12 students for one teacher.

There are less students for each teacher. So instead of 30 students and one teacher, there could be 20 students and one teacher.

I don't know if I am understanding you correctly here. it sounds like there are fewer students per teacher. This is great because the students would get more help and attention from the teacher. a much better study environment for the student.

If tyhe ratio of students to teachers is decreased then the students get more time with their treacher. if there are less kids in the classroom they get more attention/time and therefore this *should* cause better grades.

i'm not sure if this is in the right section... but usually that means that there are less students for one teacher.... :) so the class room is smaller, more chance for you to brown-nose the teacher. haha
