I've often wondered this, and also about other movies that aren't "horror" but do have other elements that seem evil. Like "Ghost Rider" - making deals with the Devil, even Lord of the Rings has evil elements in it. The good usually wins out, but really - I want to know what other christians have to say on the matter. Would Jesus be watching this movie with us? and would God be upset with us for watching man's portrayal of something so evil and dangerous? The Devil is someone who has power, and no one knows exactly what he looks like, though the Bible says he can portray himself as an angel of light. This is the one who can deceive us and cause us to fall away from God and eternity (though the one who makes the final decision that makes us fall away is ourselves). Should we really be playing with something like that? Let me know your honest opinions. Thanks!

Excellent question. I would say in this regard, we Christians have let our guard down. We seem to think that movies don't really affect us. But they do. The "best" thing they do is weaken our desire to read the Bible and spend time with God, the worst thing is fill our minds with the garbage Satan wants to feed us. Of course not all movies are bad, but we are way too lax in our selection processes. I am speaking of myself as well of course.

Some people who are Christians seem to think that the devil ISN'T like a lion seeking those who he may devour, and that it is fine to think about things that aren't noble, right, pure, or lovely. I honestly don't know what they are thinking.

I'm not even a Christian and I have a problem with horror movies where people are tortured at the hands of some sadistic killer. I refuse to watch such movies and I honestly don't know how any caring compassionate person can stand to watch a movie where somebody begs a serial killer for his or her life while he destroys them in a horrific fashion. I guess after all these centuries, people are still entertained by gore and suffering. We're no better than the ancient romans who watched people fight to the death in their colosseum. As if the world wasn't filled with enough crazy murderers without horror movie writers giving them fresh ideas. I'd like to offer a couple of quotes from the bible. "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" Jesus also points out "The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks." Try not to let your love for others be dulled by excessive pointless horror movie violence. I would say that movies like "Ghost Rider", "Harry Potter", or "Lord of the Rings" are just plain entertaining. The Bible itself has plenty of violence in it. Violence in stories, literature, and movies is often a reflection of humanity's own violent nature. Plus a movie where everyone walks around hugging each other is just boring. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't watch movies where the whole plot of the movie involves some psychopath torturing people.

Its human nature to be interested in the age old fight between good and evil. I don't think its wrong to watch horror movies, it reminds us of the evil that exists, at least in those horror movies that aren't totally ridiculous. Of course, I'm very strong in my faith, so it would take a lot more than a horror movie to sway me anyway. Actually, if you feel the need to avoid horror movies as they could test your faith, I gotta wonder at your ability to watch the news without having your faith tested. The news is frightening and the reality makes it worse than any movie. Face it, if your faith can be swayed by watching a fictional movie, you can't have much faith in the first place.

I know your parents and the people around seem that they have your well being in mind, but they are lying to you. They don't know anything more about a God than anyone else. They have bought into a myth, into folklore. I'm truly not trying to offend. I want people to know that they can live a good life without the dogma, without the shackles of religion. The Devil by the way is merely a reflection of human evil. He is not actual. I can say this because there is not evidence of him or God either. Humans do evil things, that can be easily seen and felt. I'll need evidence before believing anything I am told. If there is a God, it gave us our brains and we need to use them.

Although I can see your doubting in this question. You are trying to see how religion can co-exist with your life; with practical living. Sadly this is difficult to do. Religion will stop you from being human, create guilt and an "us versus them" belief system.

Do some research on critical thought and logic. The religious types around you won't approve of this, but it is merely their fear of being wrong or of having to change their long standing, comfortable delusions. Your still young I imagine, so you still have time.

Be critical of what people tell you. Investigate it. THINK.

-Peace.

I pray everynight
I don't Say GD or say our fathers name in vain
I pray for others
I thank God for everything he gives me
I believe and have faith in him
I ask for his forgiveness everytime I stray
I don't go to church every sunday,I feel that too many people use it for a good social standing.
I watch all sorts of movies
I read Harry potter books
I've majored in biology, had to do reports on evolution, though I've clearly stated that scientists believe there was a big bang(not that I thought so..)
I watch alot of anime which has alot of demons, and magic and whatnot in it, but it's fantasy(though it would be interesting to have some characters be real..) It's the fight between good and evil..

anyway, I am a human being, I cannot be perfect, that would make me equal to God, which I definately am NOT.
I have a friend who is scared into following God by what her church says "if you don't go to church, if you watch TV, you'll go to hell where the demons rip you apart everyday..." She can't cut her hair, or wear pants(I thought paul wrote the hair thing to tell prostitutes apart from other women), she can't do anything and Is constantly oppressed and majorly suffering from depression. I think our God is more merciful than what MAN is trying to say he is, but that is my belief.

There's a difference between a devoted christian and a scared fanatic, which you'll run into alot.
Just follow your beiefs and Good luck!

You maybe didn't think you'd get atheist and agnostic opinions when you asked this.

There are plenty of books on this subject and they call can be summarized in this way:

Watching any movie or any TV show is not a sin. If you keep in mind that it is only entertainment and you don't "delight" in evil, then you're OK. It's only when you delight in seeing someone act evil that it is a problem.

You do understand that it is a movie don't you?
Narneia (how ever it's spelled) per trade evil, was it wrong to watch. Better yet, the Passion had evil in it, should we have watched it? The problem is not the movie, but what you take out of it.

Several years ago vampires were considered evil. Now the shows portray them as hero's.
There is a desensitization taking place in our nation and television is the tool.

When evil is called good and good called evil we are headed for a great battle.

It is wrong!
My wife told me years ago it takes a mind that is dabbling in the occult or someone possessed to write these movies. If we buy or rent them, we are supporting such people.

It is of my opinion, we shouldn't have those kind of movies in out home.
But we each have to make those decisions for ourselves and our own homes.
We also made it a practice in our home; if it is too bad for our children to watch, we won't watch it either.

I don't see how watching horror movies would be anti-Christian. After all, Christianity is centered largely around the battle between good and evil and so are a lot of horror films, so they're actually somewhat similar.
