I use MS excel 2003 all the time for work, and usually the files are quite big, 50 -100 Mb. When I run calculation, it often causes my computer to freeze for about 1-2 hours. The computer I use has 2 gig ram.

Can anyone let me know if anything I can to do solve this problem? What about Excel 2007?
Can anyone let me know

Well, for one thing that is a HUMONGOUS file size for Excel. You have a good bit of RAM and going to Excel 2007 isn't really going to help you as far as reducing that amount of time. You got several good ideas for help.

There are several things that I'd recommend.

1.) Close down any other applications you have running
2.) Defrag your computer
3.) Check your computer for spyware
4.) Eliminate any blank cells that are getting counted as filled cells like the one person stated
5.) DEFINITELY reduce the number of formulas in your workbook. You probably have thousands of formulas in that workbook, each one of those formulas is a calcuation Excel has to make and takes up time. If you can convert any of those formulas to raw data numbers that will definitely help.
6.) Consider moving and storing your data in Access versus Excel. That is really too much data to keep in Excel and a database would be much better suited to your needs. You can then export the data you want evaluated to Excel or link Excel to your Access data.
7.) Have IT look at your computer and remove any programs off the start menu list that don't need to be running. Often you'll have a lot of programs running in the background that make start up for a certain program faster (its sort of like the program is already halfway running). Any programs that are on the start-up menu that you don't need, have IT remove them. Have IT do it though, remove the wrong one and you could have problems.

The main thing I'd focus on is reducing the number of formulas in your file. It's not so much the file size that bogs it down but rather the number of Calculations it has to make. When you reduce the number of formulas you reduce the number of calculations and the time it takes.

IMHO the type of calculations you are likely to be running on excel should not cause your PC to freeze for the lenght of time. I've often had calculations for spreadsheets going through to cells BB across and thousands going down, and never had such delays... at the most a second or two... and the PC i was running them on was very low spec with 400MHz clock speed and 128MB RAM... you must be running a lot of background applications that's causing the delay.

You have exceeded the amount of data excell can hold and process efficiently. If you have that much, you need to export to Access and use that program. If you cant free yourself from the spreadsheet, buy the latest and greatest Computer and use Office 2007. Your wait time will probably be cut by 2/3rds

Many people don't look to see if they are operating with extra/dead/white space in their workbooks. Do a CTRL+END and make sure your last cell is at the end of your print/calculation area. If not, delete those rows & columns to free up some memory. Same thing for unused worksheets - delete the unused ones of those, too. Once you get rid of the junk, you should have more success!

I agree with the poster who said the extra applications could be slowing you down. Or, you can try turning the automatic calculations off, and then having it calculate when you are going to be away from the computer for a while (lunch, meeting, etc.)

You need a database, not a spreadsheet.
