We should always use other means first, such as to call the police or to possibly injure without fatality - maybe talk the burglar out of the situation and to not harm anyone. Also in these situations we should avoid anger which is possible with the grace of God.

I'm catholic also and I believe that killing in defense is a sin. God didn't say "thou shall not kill, unless...." but, then again, Joan of Ark was a leader in a war and she became a saint. So, I'm not sure what the catholic church says about it, but I would consider it a sin.

Sin is only relative to specific religions. Most forms of morality accept defense as a valid reason for taking a human life, but some don't.
