First...why are we checking a blood count on a 1 year old...Has she been sick? Viral illness can cause a temporary reduction in the WBC's. Are any other counts low...Red BC, Platelets? If so, could be a bone marrow supression for some reason or another. Make sure to keep the scheduled follow up's and go to the doctor if you notice anything different. WBC's are the front line defense mechanisms for illness, and having a low count makes her susceptible to disease. Good Luck!

It might not mean anything. There is a wide range of normal values for blood cell counts, and perfectly healthy people can have blood counts falling outside the normal range. Differential blood cell counts vary because the mix of different types of cells changes in response to infections and other external factors. Sometimes a certain type of blood cell count appears low because some other type of blood cell is actually elevated. If you are concerned, you need to call the doctor that ordered the blood test and ask them to explain the results. If the doctor had a concern about the blood test results, they certainly would have informed you, so most likely there is nothing wrong - just a cell count slightly different than the norm.

White blood cells fight infection. The white blood count (WBC) is part of a complete blood count (CBC) that is used to check your blood counts. There are several types of white blood cells
Things you can do to reduce your risk of infection when you have low white blood count:
Frequent hand washing of both you and those coming in contact with you.
Avoid contact with anyone who is sick. If someone in the home is sick limit contact and consult your doctor or nurse.
Do not have dental work done while your white blood cell count is low.
When to call your doctor or health care provider about low blood count:
Call immediately if you have:
A temperature greater than or equal to 100.5°F. (Check with your health care provider, you may be instructed to call for temperature greater than or equal to 100°F)
Chills (rigors) or shakes
Sudden onset of a new unexplained pain.
Call within 24 hours if you experience the following:
Sore throat
Sores in your mouth
A white coating in your mouth, especially your tongue
Signs of a bladder infection
Burning with urination
Blood in your urine
Needing to urinate more frequently than normal
Having to urinate in hurry and possibly not making it to the bathroom in time.

This means that she will take longer to recover from illnesses, and some more serious illnesses that the average person can still survive may kill her. Basically, try to get her vaccinated against anything you can, even the flu. Give her things to help boost her immune system as well, such as Vitamin C. Be very careful about illnesses. If someone at school has a cold, give her a mask so she won't be as likely to catch it. It may sound a little paranoid, but its better to be safe than sorry.
