I think crate training is the easiest. If you go away for a few hours or overnight put the dog in the crate. Soon as you let him out, go right outside to his toilet area. Praise him when he goes. Also, associate a word with going outside-or always say, do you want to go outside. If you are consistant he will learn.

Crate training is the best option. It will probably take a dog longer who has been in a shelter and had to potty in his living area to be housebroken, but do not give up on him. Longer does not mean it is impossible. Also dogs tend to have very regular schedules so don't leave food and water out for free access provide it at scheduled intervals and you will be able to better predict when your dog will need to use the restroom. When you take him out to potty put him on a leash and walk him in the same small, boring potty area over and over this will help so that when he goes potty you can praise and treat him and make a big deal out of it and you will know for sure if he has gone potty or not. If he hasn't and he has recently eaten or drank don't assume he doesn't have to go.. this will be the situation when you bring him inside then he will go immediately. Instead put him back in his crate and try again in 15 minutes. Also make sure you use a good cleaner when he potties inside. Especially if you have carpet as wee etc. can soak through to the pad and the scent of waste will make a dog think that is where he is suppose to go potty. Use an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle and don't be afraid to soak the area as much as the pee soaked it. Good luck and keep up the hard work.

You might want to try and take a treat outside with you. Once he eliminates give him the treat and praise him. Keep a 'house leash' on him while inside. It must be a different leash than the outside leash. This way you can keep track of him so you see he isn't going into other rooms unsupervised. If you catch him eliminating in the house, yell 'NO' and startle him, this should make him stop peeing. Take him outside immediately, then praise him when he finishes outside.
He should get the idea.
Also make sure you are using a pet enzyme on 'accidents' in the house. Even if you use other types of cleaners, the dog can still smell their pee in the carpet or on the floor. When you clean the area, make sure to cover about 4-5 inches around the actual spot. Their pee spreads under the carpet.
Hope this is helpful

just as u do with a puppy! older dog even one that where once outside dogs understand more how to please u.
scruffing an older dog does not always work. and u can't pick up an older dog but try a little shake when caught in the act of going on the floor. the dog has to be caught while doing it and correct while doing it else the dog/pup is clueless and take longer to housebreak.
crating is a good idea when at work.
shouldn't take to long...few weeks.
good luck and thanks for adopting an adult he'll come around its only been a few days!

You train an older dog very much in the same manner you use to train a puppy.
It all comes down to offering the dog and yourself many opportunities for success.
Dedicate yourself to this.
Keep your eyes on the dog at all times... or have him confined in a crate or other "safe" area (I prefer crates as most dogs will not eliminate there).
Use a tether or leash and tie the dog to your waistline to keep him WITH a human at all times when he is not in the crate. This reminds both you and the dog that you're both accountable at this time.
If the dog has an accident.. roll up a newspaper .. wrap a few rubberbands around it.. and whap yourself over the head for not watching the dog better.
Take the dog out after waking, after every meal and at least every 2 hours until he gets the idea. REWARD every successful potty outside.
Keep your eye on the dog. Take him out if he circles, sniffs or shows other signs of needing to go out. Often you can see a difference in the color or shape of the anal opening if they need to poop.
If he attempts to potty in the house a loud ACK!!! and quick dash outside (easy because he's leashed to you) and you can reward the successful outdoor potty. Personally, I verbally chew a dog out who attempts to lift their leg in my house as it is a dominance issue and NOT a peeing issue... depending on the dog they may also get a scruff shake.... followed by a reward for pottying outdoors.
You may want to consider setting aside a weekend devoted solely to training. If you do that, you can decrease his food intake by half so he is hungry, then bait water with blenderized canned food mixed with water so he drinks a lot. What goes in has to come out... lots and lots of successful training opportunities... and you can give bits of kibble or cookies for a good job.
Good luck and thank you for rescuing.

just keep doing what you are doing. in time the new dog should get the idea that outside is where he does his job.i had a pound dog like that also and after a few days he got accustomed to going out with my other guy and does great now. he will still have a few accidents but it takes time and patience for them to get use to the new surrounding.he has had a lot of changes in the past few weeks with the altering, then a new home with all kinds of sounds and smells to explore, beagles can be a little stubborn so just keep working with him.good luck

i don't have the final answer to your question yet i might choose to sympathize. I even have had dogs all my existence and, such as you, i like them to bits. i'm beneficial some human beings will say its purely an animal as many human beings don't understand that they are extra beneficial than that, they are part of the family members and placed across you lots love and convenience. i wish you come across someplace to your puppy. are you able to ask a chum or a neighbor in the event that they might like him? a minimum of then you are able to nevertheless see him and this won't disillusioned the dogs too lots. 9 years is long term. ultimate needs x
