I think it is security theatre - more intended to make you feel safe than actually make you safe. That is one reason they let lighters back.
There are some things they have done to make things safer. Reinforcing the cabin doors, so no one can get to the pilots is huge. Replacing the security folks with better paid, and more motivated security folks is good.
I fly weekly in and out of Reagan National in DC. Security procedures are more thorough for those flights, which fly within a half mile of the White House. I have to go through those enhanced security checks (mostly ID checks). While I do believe much of this is theatre, I also do not understand why people consider it so annoying! Unless there are long lines (I run into long lines fairly rarely) it is not a huge inconvenience. I suspect the real security is stuff you don't see.

I have always wondered what will happen if they start using martial arts experts to hi-jack planes. Would they not let really buff people fly? Honestly if you knew what you were doing you could probably stab someone with a pen. I think they need to draw the line somewhere. It's hard for me to keep my mouth shut when I get interrogated for having a nalegene full of water from my sink because sometime in the next 12 hours I might just get thirsty.
There should certainly be security but, I think everyone needs to realize that in life you can't eliminate all risk. After all you can die from de-hydration, lol.

To be honest, airport security needs to become tighter. Taking off your shoes is a bit stupid unless your wearing massive boots with a large coat hanging over them. The liquid thing is also dumb. Really the main concern should be baggage and what the hell is in the baggage. I would even go so far as to all passangers having to open their bags for a lite inspection. It may seem over the top, but its better then plummeting 41000 feet out of the air and into a damn building!

I think we have gone a little overboard with the limitation of liquids and removing shoes. I'm more concerned with actual weapons and what is in the cargo hold. I always love it when I'm selected for the "special" security check and they paw thru my dirty underwear rubbing it with special paper to see if I had hidden a bomb in it. Speaking of "dirty jobs"!

I think that the security is totally inconsistent, inconvenient, and unoriginal. I think that TSA is composed of alot of mindless functionaries. I think that if I were a terrorist, I would definitely come up with another idea to circumvent all the nonsense. It is a lot of show for a little feeling of safety.

A little bit tight and seemingly ridiculous, but it's all for the better, and terrorism can be cut short easier because of these rules. I'd rather be safe than blown up!

I'm glad they have them. I don't want a shoe bomber or some other terrorist on my flight.
