It may be time for me to make a job change and am not sure what direction I should go. I am in outside sales now for a company I have been with for three years and it's not really for me. I feel like I need to do something bigger, that helps people. How do you choose which way you should go?

Helping people is valuable but it depends what you mean by helping people. I work in a profession that "helps" people...I manage a program for people who are entering the workforce after an absence (newly arrived immigrants, ex-offenders just released, people laid off).

The money is not very good; typical helping professions pay $10-20/hr and the work is stressful. Usually it is grant funded and grants come and go each year.

How to pick a career...do informational interviews.

http://jobsearch.about.com/od/infointerviews/a/infointervquest.htm. This is the best way to find out if a career or job is best for you. You can ask candid questions without the stress of doing a formal job interview. People will be willing to talk. I have spoken with VPs and other execs and Fortune 500 companies...I was surprised that everyone I emailed or called responded. If you show interest in what they are doing, they will do the same for your career. The poeple who do the jobs you might be interested in are the most informed about what it would take to enter a particular field.

In the end you should pick something that lines up with your values. If you want to make a lot of money, pick that kind of job. If you want to make a difference in the world (i.e. working with kids), pick a job like that...

Good luck!

You need to identify your a) talents & b) interests .

Next , start scrolling through the classifieds from A to Z just to see what is available and see if anything clicks .
Once something starts inspiring you , then start focusing your search in that area .

What other people make in $$$$ and what makes them happy is Not relevant to you .
2 people in the same field can have totally oppposite work experiences .
Success and poverty .

Only something that motivates you and fits will your skills will work .

Good Luck !
