are you asking, have i ever just hated? not just for an hour or day, but for months and years? i mean hated; wanted nothing more then to hurt anyone the would be dumb enough to stand in your way? had no more feelings of family, that they were just another brick in the wall that needed to be torn from the fabric of your mind? no love, just hate and rage? then yes, i have, there was a time in my life, i felt that even the devil should fear me.. i was wrong..

Yes. And so did Abraham. Heard a sermon on it last Sunday (see Genesis ch 15). There are 3 things that bring it on: being physically, emotionally and spiritually drained. Spiritually, 3 factors contribute to that: loneliness arising from God's calling; weariness fulfilling duties and fighting battles; great frustration regarding God's promises. That's why, when God repeated his promise of an heir, Abraham almost exploded and (sort of) said, 'But what about that promise, made so long ago and STILL not fulfilled? Why are you going on about future things? I want to know when I'll get an heir!' And dreadful darkness afflicted him after he did what God commanded. But God brought him through it and reaffirmed his covenant, showing what would happen hundreds of years into the future. Abraham needed to keep faith with the stead-fastness of God, believing the promises. That is why he became God's friend. We fluctuate from day to day, but God is the same - rock solid. That's what brings us through any 'dark night of the soul'. Be comforted that even those obeying God can go through dark providences.

Yes. Evelyn Underhill speaks to this issue and it's psychological impact (it is mentioned in 'mysticism' in Wikipedia) related to giving up all the vestiges of the learned (ego) identity.

It is simply being forced by reality to undergo ego death in its fullest sense. It only feels like the end, when it is in fact the beginning in the journey toward 'eternal aliveness' and purpose.

I think the correct expression is "The long dark tea-time of the soul".
