There is no short answer. If you can describe the person who you want to claim, an answer can be provided. Whether you can claim a dependent depends on whether the person

1. Is related to you
2. Lived with you
3. Had income
4. Supported himself, or you supported him.
5. Is married and filing a return with their spouse.
6. Is a US citizen, national, or resident of Mexico or Canada.

One example is that your unmarried child under 19 who lived with you for more than six months and did not support himself is your dependent.

If they lived in your home for at least six months, if your child is an adult but lives with you and goes to school, and a few more that I cannot remember off-hand. Go to the IRS website for in depth info.
