You have your parents marriage certificate and as a UK based researcher we are some what spoilt with a national index of birth, deaths and marriages , I was wondering if you could get your fathers birth certificate, just to double check his details, All the best and good hunting.

you could check the census from 1930 (last one publicly released) if you know where (city, etc) your grandfather lived. It will say place of birth among other things.
(bear in mind with the census reports that names are misspelled--the original taker wrote down what he/she heard, which may not be the original spelling. A number of these records have been transcribed onto the Internet, and that person may have misread it. That happened to me with my great grandfather; I finally found him by actually looking at the scanned picture of the record.)
Go to any place with some genealogy resources to help you. In Chicago, there is the Newberry Library. Also the Mormons have great records (you may have to pay), & there are federal libraries & archives with that sort of information(http://www.archives.gov/frc/index.html). Check out Cyndi's List at: http://www.cyndislist.com/ for more references or ancestry.com--they have a free subscription (very limited access) that might get you started with locations when you do a name search. Just don't pick exact spelling for every search!

Jackie:
If you will email me with the info you have on your father I will see what I can do to help you.

I know how things can just vanish. I've had it happen many times if I walk away for a while.

Is your father still living? Do you know if there is a family Bible?

Just send me everything you know and I'll go hunting.

My best suggestion is to go to the book store and get a magazine about geneology. That was very helpful to me. Another site that I used was if you know where they worked, go to that human resources dept. Also church records. And you might try to find information through a military locator site if they were in the military.
