I adopted 2 cats, a 3 year old neutered male and a 1 1/2 year old female. The female went into heat this week and the malekeeps trying to get with her. Is this normal or do you think the male wasn't really fixed?

It's normal. Mounting can also be a "dominance" thing. :) Try to get Ms. Kitty fixed before she gets out and get preggers!

Good luck! :)

Okay, I never really understand why people don't get this. When an animal is spayed or neutered, the "drive" is still there. The only thing the vet did was take away the ability for sperm or eggs to be produced. It is no different than a human male that has had a vasectomy or a female person that has had her "tubes tied". He did not remove the penis or sew up the vagina. Most of the time the reason for "humping" in the animal world, is dominance, but as stated before the drive has not been removed. Please, take the time to talk to your vet about this. It is important to realize what has truly happened when an animal has been spayed or neutered.

Yes.. It's happened.. The male doesn't have any hormonal urges to mate, but a female in heat can still trigger the instinct if she's annoying enough lOL..

Nothing to worry about.. he can't get her pregnant.

BUT.. you should fix the female.. Females in heat are annoying, sometimes spray, and turn into little houdinis at getting out of the house.. (You think she can't?? Don't kid yourself!! Outside she'd quickly find a tom that wasn't neutered and you'd have a preggo cat, and for each kitten she has, you are killing another cat or kitten in a shelter somewhere waiting for a home which your kittens take from them, leaving the shelter cat to be euthanized.

Usually a neutered male can still mate with a female. This is a good thing since female cats will continue to cycle as long as there is enough daylight until they mate. The mating causes ovulation even if the female doesn't not become pregnant. This gives you a break when you can get the female spayed without as much risk.

You can "fix" their bodies, but you can't alter their brains. Natural instinct will cause a cat to do this, even when a male is neutered.

I agree with instinct and dominance. But neutering isn't the same as a vasectomy. Or getting tubes tied. It is the removal of the testicsls and the removal of the ovaries, and uterus for females.

That's very normal. We have a family of cats; mom, dad and two babies, and the parents still have sex even though they are both fixed. They still have the instincts.

Yes, the neutering just turns off the sperm production, not the behavior. They still do what they normally do, just without the babies.
