Shoplifting & travelling?
my friend was caught shoplifting. she has been given dates for finger printing and first court appearance. would she still be able to travel to the US by car for a short trip (from canada)? what kind of information is shown on the driver's licence at the border crossing? (she'll only have her citizenship ID and driver's licence.)
technically, she hasn't been found guilty. but will this affect her traveling to the states? or would she be refused entry?
i'm assuming that any run-in with the police would leave some sort of a record. but what will show up on the record if she hasn't gone to court yet?
thanks for your help!

she's been getting a lot of different answers from lawyers, etc. they all seem to want to scare her by telling her she would need to pay $$$ for a waiver or visa of some sort. i've got a friend who works on the canadian side of the border crossing, and he said it shouldn't be a problem unless there's a warrant for her arrest.

she's definitely not thinking of fleeing in any way. shoplifting is still wrong, but it's minor compared to other criminal charges. she's willing to accept the consequences. her family had planned on taking a quick weekend trip to the US. and she's scared something might come up and embarrass her family because they don't know about the shoplifting. she's thinking of just faking illness and not going. but she's just considering her choices right now.

tell not to worry ,
nothing is going to happen,
just try and be cool when she gets to the customs station,,
remind her to show only her birth certificate and one other photo ID like a medical card , if she is asked for a driver licence tell them you don't have one that your vision impaired,
make sure she is a passenger and not the driver.
just another thought, people should protect themselves and their future by not stealing anything from anyone the rest of us pay for it in the long run, just ask the girl in this story ill bet she would like to go back in time and not do something that dumb.
another way of reminding us of 9/11

If the case is pending she should have no restrictions unless the court finds her to be a flight risk. In that case she could find it to be more difficult to cross the border. If she travels before her court appearance, she should have no problems.

As she has not been found guilty, she will probably be able to cross the border.
If and when she is found guilty, it is a horse of a different color, and she may not legally cross the border.

The only good answer you can get is from the court house. Call and ask.

depends on what her stipulations are with her release while awaiting trial... it may look like an intent to flee the country...

it will not effect her at the border in any way-privacy laws prohibit getting that kind of information easily.
