I live in VA, and I was parked in my apartement complex parking lot, where I was issued a parking pass through the complex (which was on my car). I moved from the state of Maine so I have been in the process of switching over my insurance and registration. My registration expired through Maine in August, and on September 4th, I found a parking ticket on my car for having an expired registration sticker. I thought I should get a warning first, or even some sort of grace period to register your car. Can I contest my ticket?

I haven't been in VA for long (less than one month)- I don't think its fair to issue tickets without warning and on private property. Especially since the DMV is only open for 4 hours on Saturdays, and closes at 4:30, long before I get out of work. If they expect me to pay for the ticket, I need to make money somehow!

I don't think that's fair that they gave you the ticket without warning. You also deserve a grace period. I would contest the ticket and see what happens. In the meantime, make sure you get your car registered!

You would have gotten a warning ticket for out of State registration since you now live in Va. You got a ticket for expired registration. Big difference. As stated, you are lucky the car wasn't towed.

Yes.... parking tickets can be written every where there an area that is open to the public flow of vehicle traffic. It is no different then the parking lot of a mall, grocery store and such. The are privately owned lots, but they are still open to the public.

The only place you can not get a parking ticket is on property that you own and that is never open to the public flow of traffic. That would be like the drive way of your home or in a lot or other property that YOU own.

So, yes, the parking ticket is valid. And they can keep issuing them to you until it is legally registered.
