i want to do some self-defense training, karate can be used wherever i go, but a robber will defnitely have a knife and unarmed combat skill seems trivial in such a case. In a peaceful time, no combat skill is needed at all and i need not learn even karate, and in dangerous time, i don't mind going around with a nunchunk in my belt like a cowboy in the west.

Look man, don't listen to any of these Karate Weinies!

Look at me, I am top contributer and top 10 Answerer, obviously I know the scoop.

First off Karate means "Empty Hand", while that is good any all "Knife in Hand" is way better than an "Empty Hand" am I right?

Absolutely go with nunchucks! Forget all that "illegal" garbage, most places let you keep them and just by wearing those bad boys on the side, no criminal will bother to attack you.

So what is more important? Getting a ticket, or SAVING YOUR LIFE?

Forget that fancy kicking and punching, and all that. Learn Nunchucks and if anyone dares messes with you, then you can easily take them out.

Unarmed combat is HIGHLY overrated. Most people aren't going to fight you unless they have a gun, a knife, and some friends.

Trying to fight those odds with Karate is STUPID. With Nunchucks you can own their @sses hard, and Survive! YOU can beat them all down and then take THEIR money just to prove your point!

I say learn Nunchucks, and wearing them on your side. I have never seen a cop go up to someone wearing nunchucks. You wear them and the criminals will stay away cuz they know you are a bad @ss!

If they do decide to mess with you, out with the nunchucks and wreck their sh*t!

Nunchucks have been proven to be the hardest hitting most powerful weapon there is, that is why states try to ban them. But still States also have laws in place like no doggy style, I don't see the cops enforcing that one either.

So don't worry about what these weinies say. Learn Nunchucks and PROTECT YOUR LIFE!

1)nunchuckus arent the best weapon to have in practicality just because even as an expert theres still a fair chance of you wacking yourself in the nuts
2)you would be carrying around a concealed weapon and if i were gonna be breaking the law to do that anyway i'd carry a knife, retractable nightstick, brass knuckles once again something more practical then nunchuckus. or heck get a license to carry a gun
3)a robber could have a gun and you reaching for your nunchuckus in your belt could most likely get you stabbed or blasted away by his gun
4)some karates will teach you weapons anyway
5)some other arts would teach you how to defend against weapons:ecrima, krav maga

Wow. LOL the post above me is total BS. Yeah, right he met Bruce Lee. If he met Bruce Lee he would have know that Bruce said a gun is the best weapon to have. If you don't believe me; check out his only English interview.

As for what you should learn; learn Karate. It will be better for you in the long run.

If you want a practical weapon based martial art, don't pick up a pair of nunchuka. They're next to useless in my honest opinion. They look good swung around though. Sticks are instantly more effective and much more readily available - pool cues, rolled up magazines, chair legs...

Want to defend against a knife? Learn to knife fight. Therefore I'd recommend Filipino Martial Arts.

Try learning stick fighting even in a short time you can learn proficiency in it.It can usually beat a knife unless things are complicated by things such as holds or blackmail.

You learn how to use nunchuk in karate.
Just ask the teachers. Most karate gym teaches them, and some doesn't. Krav Maga also teaches you some skills with using knives.

You can learn both in the same Art in Karate. But with any Art you learn you have to crawl before you walk.
Good Luck hope you find what you are looking for.

First of all they are nunchaku not "nunchuks". Nunchucks sounds like a method of throwing religious women around.

Karate is an entire martial art system. Nunchaku is one weapon in that system.

You should learn an entire system, not just bits and pieces of it.

Also, nunchaku are illegal in most states so I don't advise walking around with them unless you like meeting your local law enforcement.

There are many styles of Karate that include Kobudo (weapon fighting) in them, including my own style Isshinryu, which has Sai and Bo, sometimes Tuifa (Tonfa) and Kama and even sometimes Nunchakus.
