This is fascinating to me...How do christians know what exactly to tithe? I know it says in the bible to give of your firstfruits, or of your increase...but when I first started going to church it was 10% but by the time I left the church/cult they were asking for 20%. If you didn't write your name on an envelope to claim your offering or write a check it was amazing how quickly they would repremand you ...because then they wouldn't be able to keep up with what you give...they kept records
There was a family I knew they were struggling and they had 2 children who both had stomach allergies and it was very expensive diseases... the pastor had the audacity to ask them to stop coming to church because they were being deceitful by not giving to god at a consistent rate...Christians claim that god won't bless you if you don't tithe... but everyone I knew who tithed was in dire straits...They even expect you to tithe on money GIFTS!! I got repremanded for not tithing on graduation money

jesussaves: I am not an idiot I am fully aware that in the OT it wasn't money my point is that now it is money hence my detailed explanation after my question. All these newer fundamentalist christian churches claim to be all about the heart of jesus and the blood and your relationship with jesus but you will never find a church of this belief that doesn't take offerings...

undying: you are right...they were modern pharisees and if there is something worse that them also. It was a charismatic , dressy church. Everything was for show, they had a beautiful building everyone dressed like it was a ballroom and they danced and screamed and fell down ... all that great stuff... I don't go to church anymore, and I don't believe I will ever again. I left that church about 4 years ago and now I will do everything I can to expose it.Thank you for your input :)

Many miss the fact that this was a unified culture in many ways. Of course there was in-fighting like any cohesive group that exists for any period of time may have.

Why 10% - This was not a 10th - it was more but less depending. Tithe comes from the word and old word for 10th.

Now back to the reason - Today we have social security and various programs to help the handicapped, fatherless, the widow(ers), war veterans and so forth.

Originally the temple and the leadership existed to help the people and not to live off of the membership. They collected and disbursed funds for God to help people meet their physical, mental, emotional, and Spiritual needs. That is the purpose of the CHURCH!

So the CHURCH was to help these people and not turn them away.

With honesty and service and prudence 10 percent is plenty.

We have a top heavy government that is much more involved in ifrastructure than in days of old so taxes are high.

You have been hurt and they have treated you wrongly.
It is the duty and responsibility for the church to help the membership. This is what a "CHURCH" is for and you can tell them I told you to tell them. A church that is like this looses God's Blessings.

VERY Good Question! It depends upon whether or not or no longer you want to be in compliance with Holy Law! Make no mistake The Most High KNOWS! That stated, the Anointed of this Generation of Fire has offered for it to be one million/10 of take house. If you get a reimbursement, then one million/10 of the refund is due. If any one is in dire economic straits - that are supposed to be a clue that the testimony is AGAINST men and women who can not pay to be in compliance with Holy Law. While the drawback is also Holy Ground for a few contributors, it's most often a well signal that people who are in such instances are in Violation of Holy Law! That stated, it's also an abomination to Tithe to a church group that's in violation of Holy Law. For instance, the church buildings that experience used Tithe cash to look after pedophiles is mistaken. Tithing to a church that calls for such NOT at the TRUE sabbath, perpetuating 'notion' and 'religion', NOT KNOWLEDGE and OBEDIENCE, could also be no longer going to be identified via The Most High Lord God of ALL Creation as a True and Rightful present. Paying tithes is not quite a question of 'notion'. There is a lot more in The Anointed, The Elect, and The Damned! While many would possibly not recognize the TRUTH of this reply, it's nonetheless however TRUTH! All of it's testable inside the confines of your possess soul - the situation wherein it must topic probably the most.

Anyone who tells you how much to give is wrong. The Bible does state 10%. This means a minimum of 10% of time as well. Most people who harp on money do not do this...thats over 2 hours a day to focus on God alone. I tithe however much i feel i can afford then a little more. This makes for an amazing month of God blessing me in many ways i could have never expected. If someone guilts you into tithing or repremands you about it...thats well, ignorant and very immature. You are very correct to get away from these people....They sound like pharisees instead of followers of Christ...Just a quick question...did they wear 3 piece suits every sunday and pray loud and long.....:)

God bless you

Follow God
Forget idiots

Tithing is a biblical precept as you know. I pay a tithe on my earnings and on gifts as well. 10% is what the bible suggests. I have seen many miracles and if you ask any faithful, joyful tithe payer in my church why they pay tithing, they will all tell you they cannot afford to go without the blessings it brings more than they cannot afford the tithing. When you tithe with a joyful attitude, you are blessed. No doubt about it. The bible promises this also.

Now, when churches refuse to accept whatever you give, they are not within their rights. It's between you and God how much you pay, not between you and your church. Your church, however, must be badly organized if they cannot make their operating expenses if individuals give an actual percentage of what they bring in on a weekly basis, and if they budget based on your expected income.

NO CHURCH has the right to EVER tell people not to attend, under any circumstances. Every kind of sinner is welcome in God's house. If your child is ill and your tithing dips below what they think it should be, that is certainly the worst excuse I have ever heard for a family being turned away, but really it's unacceptable to turn people away from worshipping! I can see people not wanted a pedifile in the congregation, but you should welcome anyone who wants to give thanks to God and mend his ways.

In my opinion, you should not attend a church that has these practices. Find a good one who loves you more than your money.

Jews today DO tithe money, and usually give charity (tzedaka) over and above their tithe.

There are some good rules in place to protect people in their giving, though. Not only do you not HAVE to tithe if you're too poor--you're actually forbidden to do so. Tithing means giving a tenth of your income, and it truly is possible to make so little that it would be a hardship to do so.

We are ALWAYS supposed to give charity, though--no matter how poor we are. It doesn't have to be a lot; in fact, it can be as little as 5 or 10 dollars. The point is to give.

Even rich people have limits on how much they're supposed to give. No one--not even the richest--is supposed to give more than 20% of their earnings. Again, this is protection for the giver, to ensure that they don't impoverish themselves by the act of giving.

No one is ever reprimanded for not giving enough--that's a matter between you and G-d. In fact, much of the money can (SHOULD!) go to the poor. The synagogue needs to keep its doors open, so some money should go there--but the poor are most important.

I'm glad that you stopped going to that church; it sounds like they were scam artists. Unfortunately, religious folks like this hurt far more people than they help, and give their religion a bad name.

The churches today are apostate. It is no business of the pastor what you give! That is between you and God. I left the apostate churches out there a while ago and now I tithe to World Vision. They are doing God's work. The tithe is 10%. Plain and simple.

Tithe is 10%. (Genesis; P.S. That is not scriptural old testament either). That does not count one's offerings which are separate matters (biblically).
Perhaps it is present 'me' but I have a 'problem' with the idea of policing others giving, for multiple reasons.
Part of the 'potential' dilemna for 'the church' (non-profit organizations in America presently), I gather there are laws that indicate a 'church'is to send statements by issuer to indicate the donations to it during a year (tax purposes). If one gives 'cash' (not a check) the total could also be inaccurate for the individual.

Ministers who preach tithing are repeating the Mosaic laws the Scribes and Pharisees enforced in Christ's time.

It was the financial means for the clergy - how they were able to finance their lives.

Did Paul ask for tithes? He worked to ensure that he was of no burden to the church. Is that what ministers are to their congregations?

"Freely receive - freely give."

Tithing was a principal for the physical nation of ancient Israel - not that God needed it, but a lesson for them. They were to give 10%

Today, the lesson is spiritual (what Christ made the law). So your question should be, "how to we tithe spiritually?"

Well as a baptist I recently learned about 10% and my pastor believes that and nothing more, like this church you went to. Obvious it wasn't christian or they claimed to be but wasn't, what was the name of the church? If you put more than 10% God will bless you more, but yea 10% is all He ask's for, if you got a bonus from your job that should be tithed, anything that God allowed you to get should be tithed.

Tithing is old testament and it wasn't money. Jews were to tithe the 3rd of seven yrs. and in goods. If they gave money it was 20%. New testament is to give from a heart toward God. IF you consider that everything you have is Gods. How much you gonna keep?
