Office 2007 was put out and designed for operating on Vista, if you are not running Vista, this may be to problem as it will make Office become a memory hog. Don't get me wrong, it will run on XP and 2000, but it tends to take over. One thing you can try if you haven't already is to do a disk clean-up, then do a defrag. Anytime I add a new mega program, I do this to get the files in order. Also use your task manager to see what processes are running in the back ground taking up your memory, and back track the problem from there.

Did you install it from a Valid Office CD? Many copies out there also are full of spyware and the like.
In addition, I've never utilized the autostart Office feature. It's a terminate and stay resident program which helps the programs (supposedly) open quicker. Delete it from start up or using MSconfig.
