You need to click the minimize or maximise button right next to the x button to the left of it,the minimize will either shrink the page so you can move it(drag it) with the mouse from the top solid bar,or place a title of the page at the bottom of the screen leaving the other pages untouched-unomitted.The maximize button might have two sizes medium lrge which you can clickx offto remove that page(close) only one at a time, and a superlarge which will delete(close)all pages. This must be what you did.To be safe click minimize to land page you want to save at bottom in url or side in smaller size.

Firefox is a better alternative to IE. Get it at http://www.getfirefox.com. Also, you don't need to open a new window in IE7 because IE7 supports tabbed browsing. You can have multiple pages open in tabs instead of windows. Which version are you using?
