How would this sentence be gramatically correct:

If we knew you had preferred to see us all together, we would have of course brought him with us.

Lizzie, I don't think "would" can be on the same side of the sentence as the "if" and in any case, that makes two "would"s in one setence then.

"If we knew you had preferred to see us all together, then we would have, of course, brought him with us."



With an "if" should usually come a "then".
