I was reading Scarlet's question about quitting smoking. she quit and needed some words of encouragement. After reading her question and answering it made me think, the cigarette I'm puffing on right now only leaves 3 and I'm broke. Wheres the piggy bank. But I want to stop. I am a closet smoker, my family and fiancee think I stopped, and I'm good about hiding it. But I'm only killing myself. I am a very bad asthamtic almost died a few times. But as soon as I get discharged from the hospital, I can't wait to get to that 1st drag of a cigerette. I have said I quit before and can hold off for a day or so and then right back to that nasty habit. So whats to say I won't fail this time? I want to stop--beside the asthma, I am 41, on birth control pills. I just get bored and want something to do. I once heard that quitting smoking is as hard as quitting herion. The same chemical changes happens in the brain. I believe it. Anybody out there have any success stories to share

Also--I amskepticl about the patches. I cannot understand how they will help the part of the craving that is the most intense for me and that is the boredom (something to look forward to), the hand to mouth motion. If you can enlighten me I will pick ome up on my way to work in the morning. Also is it true to start to gain weight?

Smoking is bad enough but combined with asthma? That's dangerous.

I totally support your decision to quit smoking and I highly recommend the program on this site to help you quit for good: http://www.uhelpyourself.com/quitsmoke

They say it works for 90% of the people who follow it. I just know it works.

Good Luck!

I'm 34 started smoking when I was 18 smoked until I found out I was pregnant with my first child (he's now 4 1/2 months)

I had always said I'll stop when I get pregnant and so I did. There were no excuses left, I had no right to poison my baby, period! Bad enough having poisoned myself for all those years...

At first it was very tough especially when ppl came over and stepped outside for a smoke! God I could have killed them sometimes lol... My husband smoked a lot less then I did so he stopped when I did which helped of course.

After just a few weeks it got much much easier!!! It really did trust me! I never believed when people told ME that before lol.. You have to prepare yourself that it will be hard being around people who smoke so maybe avoid that for the first couple of months.

Now, a little over a year after I stopped, I still want a cigarett sometimes but then I just remind myself of the coughs, smell everywhere etc and the craving quickly goes away. I'm so glad I didn't start again after I had my baby and that he doesn't have to see me smoke all the time. Do you even remember what breathing was like before you started? I remember now...it's such a relief to be able to breath easier and just feel healthy.

So, it's really tough at first, don't try to find an "easy way" to do it instead accept the challange for what it is and you'll be more likely to succeed!

Very best of luck to you, YOU CAN DO IT!! ;)

You can do it like i did cold turkey... I smoked 2 packs a day. I had bought 2 packs and went to work a 12 hr shift and during that shift I decided that I was going to quit so instead of lighting up I put a tooth pick in my mouth and by the end of the shift I had smoked almost a pack instead of 2. When I finished my shift Jumped into the truck to head home I was going to smoke on the way home I had to open the next pack so i got the next pack and opened it up. Got 1 out and lit up took a big drag. started on my way home told myself that i was proud that i got through the night with 1 pack. Grabbed the pack off the dash squeezed them hard and pitched the pack out the window. And never bought another pack.

Smoked 13 years and been quit 14 good luck

Get a nicotine patch or something.

Call 13 QUIT (The quit helpline for Australia)

I have quit smoking. It's hard, but it's possible. Don't have a negative attitude 'So whats to say I waon't fail this time' - but think that "I am quitting smoking. I will be a healthier and happier person after I quit." Say that over and over to yourself. It really works! Every thime you think of have a smoke, just think of something else. Call up a friend. Go for a walk. DO SOMETHING ELSE!

I've done it, millions of other people have done it, and so can you!

Good luck!

Yes, I do.I smoked for 32 years and was at 2 packs a day when I finally got brave enough to quit. I did it without patches or pills. I smoked alot of the time out of habit. I lit one before I realized I had. It is extremely hard to quit. It has to be the worst thing I ever did. I once quit for 1 year many years ago but I went back to it. I quit for as long as 3 years once. I gained weight trying to satisfy my craving. I tried sunflower seeds and gum.The salt was wrecking my mouth so I had to quit. I knew I was substituting cigarettes until I could get over them or go back to them. I was only fooling myself. I inhailed deep breaths. It was awful. But I went back to it once again. I saw myself buying 20 cartons of cigarettes at the reservation once a month to "save money" by stocking up. Finally I decided enough was enough. I quit this past Jan. 4th and this time I don't have any craving. I found the trick for me was to have a ggod reason and a goal. Every time I wanted a cigarette I thought about why I quit. I did it because when cigarettes were 10.00 a carton I watched myself save up money to go to the reservation and buy those 20 cartons. My husband and I both smoked. I decided I couldn't afford to pay off the house and smoke. I decided the house was worth quitting for. Now I pay more on the house so I really don'y have the extra money to use for cigarettes. But if you want something bad enough you will find a way to get it. So, I know if I wanted to smoke I would find a way to fund my habit. So, the easiest way for me to not smoke is to just not put one in my mouth and light it. I know if I do I would be right back to it. I do hope this help you. Cigarettes are really expensive now and they are really bad for you. I never had breathing problems before and this time after quitting I have breathing problems. My doctor simply told me that I brought it on myself from smoking. So, good luck to you and I hope you will have a success story to..

its possible to do it

smoked for 34 years , tried stopping a few times but i knew inside i was kidding myself

diffirence this time was i had been getting chest pains , and my dad died from a heart attack

willpower is the only way to stop , even with all the tablets and everything else there was still times i would have killed my own mother for a smoke

you just have to get through those times , and it does become easier

but its like you say , in studies they reckon its even harder to kick smoking than heroin

if you want to you can do it

i wish you all the best

Yes by all means qiut now! The bible says human body is God's temple and if we defile it were not glorifying God with our body. Afterall we're just stewards of this body and a steward takes care of the things that was entrusted to them. I can reffer you to someone who can help you on a systematic way to quit.

definitely not hypnosis i strongly disagree with it. As far as i know
hypnosis is of the devil. Just be patient i'l contact you when i manage
to contact those people i know who can help you. By the way i ony
need to know where you are if it be possible they might enroll you to a
class with people like you who really have a desire to quit. If not i
guess they can help you through internet. Personally I myself have
never ever tasted a single sigarrete in my entire 36 years living in this
alreadt polluted planet. I live here in the Phillippines.

Gave up 47 years ago, still fancy a ciggy at times, but not enough to tempt me back, it is hard, and takes extreme will power, you must stop completely, one puff and you fail, you can do it, good luck.
