Stop buying them new toys, since they don't appreciate it anyway. I make my son do light chores around the house to earn his own money. Make them put away their own clean laundry, put away the dishes after they've been washed, clear the table after a meal...

I have 2 girls aged 10 and 7, they have a lot of toys and like yours the novelty soon wears off. What I do is put for example 10 toys in a bag or box and put it away for a few months. Every few months I take it out after I have sneaked another lot away, and the novelty is there again! I also find a good rearranging of toys and tidying, moving locations around and setting them up attractively makes it also 'like new'.

yes! sometimes the toy is never played with again by the time we get home! same thing with clothes, it has taken me almost 8 years but I am finally saying NO! I look at all the toys just laying in the basement and her room thinking back how much money was wasted and there are so many brand new items it is a waste to throw them out, But churches and other organizations are getting really greedy if the toy isn't brand new in the box they don't want it, And I know there has to be children out there that would just love to have these toys. we need to be tougher on our kids because giving them everything they want is not teaching them, but I think the majority of us are re-living our childhoods through our children. I know the only toys I got even for Christmas was used toys from the church, now I have overcompensated through my daughter.

Rotating toys works well that way they have not seen something in a while and its like new again but it does not cost you any more! Another trick I use when my daughter is not playing w/ something anymore is I tell her its time to give it to Goodwill (or some other charity) and all of a sudden she cant part w/ her FAVORITE toy! Once she does outgrow toys though we do take them to goodwill together or a resale shop if I can get any money for them. That way she learns the importance of giving back and that there are others who don't have as much as she does.

they are 9 and 11. They are starting to grow out of toys. I am surprised about the eye toy. I have borrowed a friends and they love it and it has been a couple of months and the novelty hasn't worn off. But mind you...why has it been 2 months we have had it? Becuase the boy who owns it hasn't played it in MONTHS. So your kids are probably normal

Do you rotate toys? I box them all up and get one different box out a day so after a week, that toy is new to them again! I never leave everything available for them - cos it causes too much mess, and they don't know what to play with so wander aimlessly around!
For instance, this morning my little one has stuff out he hasn't seen for probably three weeks and he's playing happily with them! hence my being on here in peace!

My son is 8.. He LOVES little toys.. I go into resale shops/thrift stores and let him pick out what he wants. Its SO much cheaper and he has the opportunity to make his own decisions about what keeps him more interested, and gives him a feeling of independence.
