Yes or else ps3 has no other means of accessing the internet as u cannot install modem software and drivers to run a usb modem by the ps3, a router does the job of signing in and keeps ur internet on 24/7 so to access it all u gotta do is connect a device like a pc/notebook or laptop or ps3 to it.

I have some experiience with PCs, so, trust me, I've done everything I could to plug PS3 into net without a router half a year ago. Didn't work out for me, so I paid around 35 $ for a router with VPN support (D-Link 604).

Not really, if you have a cable modem, you can just plug it straight to your PS3 and there you have it. The router thing is only valid for those ADSL connection which requires UserID and password to login.
